Only one animal wasinvolved in each stranding.Nine different species of cetaceans were found, the most frequentbeing the cornmon dolphin (Delphinus delphis), the bottlenosedolphin (Tursiops truncatus), the cornmon porpoise (Phocoenaphocoena) and the 1ong-finned pilot whale (Globicephala me1as).Two different species of pinnipeds were also observed during1991, the grey seal (Ha1ichoerus grypus) and the ringed seal(Phoca hispida).In at least 6 cases the animals were alive when first stranded,and of these three died later (28,47,91) and the other three weresatisfactori1y rescued (22,48,84).Three strandings were caused by accidental catches (12,89,93),two of which involved pinnipeds. Another accidental catch (66)was known to ocurr although the anima1 was not landed. In threeother cases (14,64,88) the animals were found with ropes andpieces of fishing gear entwined around its body which could beinterpreted as previous interactions with fishing operations.Anomalous stomach contents were found in some animal s(2,13,68,74) such as p1astic and pieces of nets.The spatia1 distribution of strandings on the Ga1ician coast isshown in the map (FIGURE 1).The temporal distribution is shown in TABLE land FIGURE 2respectively. Two annual peaks are observed in the number ofstranding events, one corresponds to the Jan-Fev-March period andthe other one to the autumn months. In general, summer is theperiod when less strandings are registered. There is acoincidence between the seasona1ity of all the strandings and theone of Delphinus delphis (41% of the strandings)..-------------- -- ---The greater number of strandings reported in 1991, in comparisonwith the 1990 figure (47 events) is in part a consequence of abetter coordination between the different groups involved in thestranding watch and the efforts to stablish a centralisedreporting .scheme for this region.However the inf1uence of other factors such as meteorologicalcondi tions, diseases, etc., in the increase of the strandingscannot be ruled out.••1i.JhJlI'".'~'.\"'Ii,_.__-t~i31>",I.'".....~,,_"""r- ,.,111 301 "dUN..
