The Interactive Film Explorer ("IFE") is an interactive multimedia user friendly program, which incorporates a computer and a laser videodisc. It provides relevant information through various modes of instruction, such as text, graphics, animation, sound and motion. This program is designed to help film students grasp complex theories and appreciate the process of analytic viewing, based on Roland Barthes' five codes of analysis, first introduced in his essay of 1970, S/Z. The program draws all its cinematic references from Jean Renoir's masterpiece, The Rules of the Game (1939); but in fact, is designed as a model, which can be applied easily to other films as well. The "IFE" brings new approaches, both stylistically and contextually, to the area of film criticism, using the latest technologies, in order to give cinema its respect as a valid art form.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 110-113)California State University, Northridge.
