Hydrodynamics seems to be an importantfactor modulating P. nobilis growth and survival.- Individuals from Mar Menor lagoon (the most shelteredpopulation) are not older than 10 years old, indicating either anearly dead or that the population was very young whensurveyed. Ma, maximum ageof the studied individuals in each population.MethodsSample collection and processing1.We used 132 empty shells collected in a depth rangebetween 5 and 10 m and from 3 exposed (E) and 4sheltered (S) populations (see Fig. 1): 1-Moraira, 2-Racó,3-Olla and 4-Tabarca in Alicante, 5-Mar Menor in Murciaand 6-Freus, 7-Gandulf in Cabrera.2.Empty shells were imbibed in epoxi resin and cut dorso-ventrally. Each piece was then cut in sections across therecords of the posterior adductor muscle scar (PAMS)(Garcia-March et al, 2011).3.One side of the cross sections was polished, mountedon a glass slide, and a thick section (c. 300 µm) was cutusing a slow speed saw (Buehler Isomet low-speed saw).4.
