The article is the author’s sociological self-reflection on the role of assistant to Romanian Roma families in Gdańsk. The assistantship project was implemented as part of the policies of municipal institutions directed towards the Romanian Roma immigrant community. The author presents the social contexts and conditions of working with this community as well as the form of activities of municipal institutions. The work of the assistant has been described from the perspective of Erving Goffman’s on role theory. The adopted perspective allows for a sociological analysis of not only the assistant’s practices, but also the role of the assistant immersed in the symbolic environment of municipal institutions. The author also describes meetings and the opportunity to discuss with Roma experts, both university and NGO.Artykuł stanowi socjologiczną autorefleksję autora nad rolą asystenta rodzin Romów rumuńskich w Gdańsku. Projekt asystentury był realizowany w ramach polityk instytucji miejskich kierowanych ku społeczności romskich imigrantów z Rumunii. Autor przedstawia społeczne konteksty i uwarunkowania pracy z tą społecznością oraz formę działań instytucji miejskich. Praca asystenta została opisana z perspektywy teorii roli Ervinga Goffmana. Przyjęta perspektywa pozwala na socjologiczną analizę nie tylko praktyk asystenta, ale także samej roli asystenta zanurzonej w środowisku symbolicznym instytucji miejskich. Autor opisuje także spotkania i możliwość dyskusji z ekspertami romskimi, zarówno uniwersyteckimi, jak i praktykami z organizacji pozarządowych
