The article outlines how the bicycle as a means of transportation can contribute to the sustainable development of a city, as well as the benefits to its residents of increasing cycling. As an example of a Polish city where cyclists are an important transportation group, Poznań is described and the actions that are being taken there along with the effects on the level of cycling. Part one characterizes how the role of the bicycle in cities has changed over the years and what benefits increasing cycling can bring to cities. In the second part, the most important constraints affecting the growth of cycling in the city are shown, along with the presentation of solutions that can reduce their negative impact. The third section outlines what steps are being taken in Poznań to increase cycling, and whether and how this is affecting the actual popularity of the bicycle as a means of transportation in the city. It discusses how, through the city’s transportation policies, it seeks to implement sustainable urban mobility.W artykule przedstawiono, w jaki sposób rower jako środek transportu może przyczynić się do zrównoważonego rozwoju miasta, a także jakie korzyści dla jego mieszkańców może mieć zwiększenie udziału ruchu rowerowego.
