The deepening gap in the level of competitiveness of European countries in relation to the US and other Asian countries in the world makes the European Union institutions take action to change this situation. Within the 2020 Strategy, the reindustrialisation program was adopted. It was recognized that industrial activity is a necessary element of a competitive economy. The measurable goal of industrial development in Europe at the level of 20% of the average share of industry in the GDP of the European Union was also specified. The paper shows that such a goal can only be considered as a guideline for the development of European countries. It is necessary to define the directions of changes in the sectoral structure of industry that are the subject of the article, to take into account the role of industrial services and to determine the place of European enterprises in global value chains. It is also necessary to take into account the impact of the digital revolution to the processes of changes taking place in industry.Pogłębiająca się luka w poziomie konkurencyjności krajów Europy w stosunku do USA i innych, zwłaszcza azjatyckich, krajów świata powoduje, że instytucje Unii Europejskiej podejmują działania dla zmiany tej sytuacji. W ramach Strategii 2020 uchwalony został program reindustrializacji. Uznano bowiem, że działalność przemysłowa jest koniecznym elementem konkurencyjnej gospodarki. Określony został także wymierny cel rozwoju przemysłu w Europie, jakim został 20% średni udział przemysłu w PKB Unii Europejskiej. Z przeprowadzonej oceny wynika, że tak określony cel można uznać tylko jako kierunkową wskazówkę rozwoju krajów Europy. Konieczne jest jego rozwinięcie i określenie będących przedmiotem artykułu kierunków zmian w sektorowej strukturze przemysłu, uwzględnienie roli usług przemysłowych oraz określenie miejsca przedsiębiorstw europejskich w globalnych łańcuchach wartości.
