Heczko*’bDefinition of probiotics, albeit known for many years, may be deceitful to some. We decided to verify whether a definition is enough to understand the meaning behind it and the students of the medical school in Cracow proved to be a very good testing ground.AIM:To evaluate basic knowledge of medical and dentistry students, i.e. future physicians and dentists in the field of probiotics. MATERIALS & METHODS:Ashort test consisting of 5 questions was prepared at the Chair of Microbiology and used on random groups of medical and dentistry students. The tested groups consisted of Polish medical (V year, n=24) and dentistry (II year, n=70) students, students from the School of Medicine in English (II year 4-year* course, n=34; III year 6-year** course, n=40; V year 6-year course, n=23). The students answered to all questions in exam settings and the answers were marked twice by 2 different evaluators to ensure correct interpretation of results. Despite many (54%) knowing the definition of probiotics (Question 1), most medical and dentistry students (93%) had problems in distinguishing probiotics from prebiotics (Question 2). On the other hand most knew that there are WHO/FAO criteria for evaluation of probiotics (n=131/191, 69%). Unfortunately when it comes to administration of probiotics in humans, the majority selected incorrect answers, including intravenous or intrathecal routes (n=117/191, 61%)! Question number 5 shows how well consumer psychology works on humans by making use of attractive species designations. The real trick in that question was administration of probiotics intravenously to pregnant women -  the important detail that many tested students missed or simply ignored. The results to that question are shown in Figure 2.CONCLUSIONS:The point was made: the study shows significant lack of knowledge in the field of probiotics, irrespective of the student group, whether Polish-speaking just studying medicine in Poland (from countries incl. USA, Canada, UK, South Africa, Norway, Sweden, etc.). Despite the fact that probiotics have become the “routine” of our modern lives, this study shows that knowledge is not necessarily parallel with “routine” and the Polish Society for Probiotics and Prebiotics should make efforts to fill this knowledge gap, especially since doctors, aside of pharmacists and media, are in actual fact the first line of information for the general population in Poland.Answer A 51/191 persons 27%Answer B 37/191 persons 19%Answer D 53/191 persons 28%* medicine fo r Co llege/University graduates ** m edicine for High School graduatesFigure 2. Results of Question 5 came as a big surprise. The majority of students answered to this question incorrectly (72%).
