Here, the perspective typically is as follows: Digital transformation leads to or requires significant changes that necessitate change management to deal with them effectively. However, from an organizational perspective, digital transformation, while significant, is just one of many drivers of change. Other factors include, for example, shifting market environments, demographic changes, cultural shifts, and sustainability challenges. Crucially, although these drivers and resulting changes are critically important for organizations, the effectiveness of their change management, and hence the success rate of change projects, is often lacking. To address this issue, digital applications to support and improve change management have been conceptualized (e.g., Kanitz & Gonzalez, 2021) and implemented in practice increasingly (e.g., DiLeonardo et al., 2020; Ewenstein et al., 2015), leading to the digital transformation of change management itself. While this subject has gained some traction in the field of change management, especially empirical research on the development, implementation, and effects of digital change management applications remains scarce (e.g., Brechtelsbauer & Laumer, 2023). Against this backdrop, IS is in a prime position to investigate this area of research for two main reasons: First, understanding how to utilize IT to improve organizational functions is a core interest of the IS discipline. Second, IS researchers can provide both the organizational and technical understanding that is required to design, develop, and evaluate digital change management applications effectively and to understand their organizational impact. In sum, these factors position IS uniquely to lead future research on the digital transformation of change management and thereby shape organizational futures.
