Includes vita."The stable fly, Stomoxys calcitrans (Linnaeus), is an obligate haematophagous insect parasite of man and animals. It is a eurythermic species capable of occupying diverse habitats and is distributed worldwide. During 1980, United States Department of Agriculture entomologists in Nebraska involved livestock entomologists from Kansas and Missouri in an intensive cooperative investigation to improve technology on suppressing large stable fly populations through integrated pest management. One essential part of this investigation involved development of mathematical models capable of consistently predicting and simulating stable fly population dynamics. At present, models exist which adequately describe various aspects of the stable fly's biology; however, additional information pertaining specifically to mortality in juvenile stadia was needed to complete the basic model. The general objectives of the present research were: 1. To quantify the natural mortality occurring from the egg to adult stages in developing stable fly populations. 2. To identify all associated natural enemies of the stable fly and other Diptera coexisting with it. 3. To measure the impact of such natural enemies on stable fly survival. Although the foregoing were the principal research objectives, other ecological investigations were made also. These will be discussed further in the text."--Introduction.Includes bibliographical references
