ABSTRACT Atrial fibrillation is the most common supraventricular arrhythmia. Its prevalence increases with advanced ages. There is an atrial remodeling with structural modifications (enlargement and interstitial fibrosis) promoting disorganization of the cardiac rhythm. Both the pharmacological and the invasive treatment by catheter aims at the prevention of thromboembolism complications and tachycardiomyopathy to improve the quality of life and reducemorbimortality.A fibrilação atrial é a alteração supraventricular do ritmo cardíaco mais comum e com uma incidência elevada progressivamente relacionada às idades mais avançadas. Existe um remodelamento atrial com mudanças estruturais (alargamento e fibrose intersticial), que promovem a desorganização rítmica. O tratamento farmacológico ou invasivo por cateteres visa a prevenção das complicações tromboembólicas e a evolução para taquicardiomiopatia numa tentativa de melhorar a qualidade de vida e reduzir a morbimortalidade
