Simulations of the full impact of the 40 TeV FCC proton beam with solidcopper cylindrical target and the problem of hydrodynamic tunneling∗N.A. Tahir1, F. Burkart2, R. Schmidt2, A. Shutov3, D. Piriz41GSI, Darmstadt, Germany; 2CERN, Geneva, Switzerland; 3IPCP, Chernogolovka, Russia; 4UCLM, Ciudad Real,SpainAfter the great and unprecedented success of the LHC,CERN is now discussing the possibility of building a new,much more powerful accelerator named the Future Circu-lar Collider (FCC). Table 1 gives the parameters of thesetwo giant machines. To estimate the damage caused by anuncontrolled release of the beam energy, extensive simu-lations of the full impact of one FCC beam on a solid Cucylinder with radius 2 cm and length 5 m, are being car-ried out. The beam is incident perpendicular to the cylin-der face, along the axis. These simulations are being doneapplying the energy deposition code FLUKA and the 2Dhydrodynamic code BIG2, iteratively, using an iterationstep of 25 ns. It is seen that the maximum energy de-position per proton is about 920 GeV/g which means thatone FCC bunch will deposit 9.2 kJ/g specific energy in thetarget. This data is used as input to a 2D hydrodynamiccode BIG2, to simulate the thermodynamic and the hydro-dynamic response of the target. The BIG2 calculations arestopped at t = 25 ns, and the modified density distributionprovided by the BIG2 code is used in the FLUKA code forthe next iteration. It is seen that att = 250 ns, which is the time when 10 bunches have beendelivered, the maximum temperature is around 90000 K.The extension of the heated zone with time along the longi-tudinal direction due to the hydrodynamic tunneling is alsoclearly visible. The corresponding density profiles are plot-ted in Fig. 3 that show substantial density depletion alongthe target axis due to the hydrodynamic effects. It is pre-dicted that the FCC protons and their hadronic shower canpenetrate up to 100 m in solid copper due to the hydrody-namic tunneling.
