Khoukaz11Institut fu¨r Kernphysik, Westfa¨lische Wilhelms-Universita¨t Mu¨nster, GermanyFor the future PANDA experiment at FAIR a novel tech-nique to visualise the interaction zone of the cluster-jet tar-get beam and the antiproton beam has been developed. Forthis purpose in recent tests at the COSY accelerator at FZJu¨lich the interaction region of the passing COSY beamthrough the internal ANKE cluster-jet target was observedfor the first time by using a Micro Channel Plate detec-tion system. Initially the detector system was designed andconstructed to run adjustment checks and to monitor thePANDA cluster-jet target during operation [1]. However,the installation at the end of the ANKE beam dump demon-strated a completely new possibility to visualise and moni-tor the interaction region of beam and target at internal tar-get experiments. The passage of the COSY beam throughthe cluster-jet target ionises the uncharged clusters, whichare detected with the MCPs (see Figure 1).COSYbeamcluster jet beam-MCP detectorsystemFigure 1: Schematical drawing of the passing COSY beamthrough the cluster-jet target. The thereby ionised clustersare subsequently detected with the MCPs.A direct observation of the ionised cluster-jet beam is pre-sented in the following Figures. The abscissa representsthe horizontal spatial direction and the ordinate the COSYbeam direction. Figure 2 depicts the projection of the inter-action zone at COSY beam injection energies and Figure 3the interaction zone after acceleration, where the influenceof the adiabatic cooling is clearly visible (reduced phasespace). The shift of the interaction zone induced by switch-ing on a steerer magnet is shown in Figure 4. This newdiagnostic tool is particularly suited for quantitative vertexpoint investigations at internal target experiments.References[1] E.
