The shell surface structures, in particular growth lines, were observed using a stereomicroscope and a scanning electron microscope.  We counted the number of growth lines and the distance between growth line, to estimate their ages in days and growth rates (μm/day).  The number of growth lines that were 187-225 of shells with the size of 411-469μm in diameter were signiﬁcantly correlated to the shell diameter (r= 0.667).  The growth rates in terms of the number of growth lines formed and the length extended in a day were calculated as 2.3 ± 0.2 lines/day and 17.26 ± 6.78 μm/day, respectively, based on the averaged distance between growth lines of 7.42 ± 2.86 μm.  本研究は Limacina helicina 未成熟個体における貝殻の成長速度を測定することを目的とした。試料は 2010 年 6 月11 日から 19 日の間に、北海道紋別市にあるオホーツクタワー付近でプランクトンネットにより採集したものを用いた。貝殻表面の成長線の有無、形状は光学顕微鏡と走査型電子顕微鏡(SEM)により観察した。成長線の計数と成長線の間隔の測定および日齢の推定を行い、1 日に形成される成長線数(lines/day)と 1 日の成長速度(μm/day)を求めた。成長線は殻表面のほぼ全体にわたって存在し、殻径 411~469μm の個体において成長線数は 187~225 本であり、殻径と成長線数の間には有意な正の相関(r= 0.667)が認められた。成長線の間隔は平均 7.42 ± 2.86 μm/line、また 1日にできる成長線数が平均 2.3 ± 0.2 lines/day であったことから、1 日の成長速度は平均 17.26 ± 6.78 μm/day と推定された。1 日にできる成長線数は偏差が小さく、殻径と成長線数の間に正の相関がみられたことから、未成熟期の短い期間においては殻径と成長線数は一次式で示すことが可能である。成長線から次の成長線が形成されるまでに要する時間は 0.4±0.03 days/line となり、成長線は約半日に 1 本できることを意味する。このような結果から、成長線は成長解析に有用な指標となりうると考えられる。
