Secularization, enthusiastic rhetoric, and historical acceleration: Notes on the reception of the French revolution in Germany

Abstract

La recepción de la Revolución Francesa en Alemania abarcó toda clase de posicionamientos: desde la adhesión hasta el rechazo, pasando también por un cúmulo de valoraciones intermedias. Muchas de estas discusiones fueron articuladas a través de los usos de la retórica entusiasta; un fenómeno discursivo cuyos significados culturales e ideológicos se hallaban asociados a los excesos del fanatismo y el profetismo apocalíptico. A través de este tipo de connotaciones, la retórica entusiasta comenzará a expresar los cambios súbitos del proceso revolucionario como un nuevo tipo de percepción histórica, determinada por la experiencia de la aceleración temporal.The reception of French Revolution in Germany comprehended different viewpoints: from strong support to clear reject, including also a variety of moderate judgments. Many of these stands articulated themselves through the discussions on the rhetorical uses of “enthusiasm”; a particular kind of speech with cultural and ideological connotations disturbingly associated to the excesses of fanaticism and millennial prophecy. Throughout these meanings, the enthusiastic rhetoric began to express the sudden changes of the revolutionary experience as a new type of historical perception: an accelerated process, full of contingencies and unpredictable developments
