Both the anxiety-defense model and the cognitive model provide a scientific basis for practical handling of the surgical patient. Emerging from both models is a humanistic approach to the patient based on understanding and a nonjudgmental attitude as well as on a knowledge of where the patient is psychologically and a willingness to meet him on his ground. Dr. Block is also visiting associate professor of psychiatry at the University of Kentucky. Douglas D. Bond (Changing Concepts of Deviance and Perspectives in the Behavioral Sciences) is professor and chairman of the department of psychiatry at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and director of psychiatric services for the University Hospitals of Cleveland, Ohio. He is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Medical School and interned at Bryn Mawr Hospital, Pa. Following residency at Butler Hospital, Providence, R. A bachelor-degree graduate of Temple University School of Nursing, he took postgraduate training in clinical psychology at Temple and received his Ph.D. in sociology and anthropology from Michigan State University.
