As I look at the list of distinguished Stoneburner Lecturers, I see I am honored by being the first psychiatrist.  This is a tribute to the Department of Psychiatry.  In thinking about this paper, I at first considered giving a kind of history of psychiatry.  What seemed to me more interesting, however, was an examination of our whole perspective on deviance, in general, and what we call “illness”—an example of a certain kind of deviance, or, perhaps more accurately, a certain way of looking at deviance

Block (Anxiety, Defense and Cognition: A Theoretical Basis for Practical Handling of the Surgical Patient) is director of the department of psychiatry at Jewish Hospital in Cincinnati and associate clinical professor of psychiatry at the University of Cincinnati. A graduate of the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, he interned at Jewish Hospital, Brooklyn, N. Y. Following his residency at Cincinnati General Hospital, he took further postgraduate t1raining at the Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis. Dr. Block is also visiting associate professor of psychiatry at the University of Kentucky. Douglas D. Bond (Changing Concepts of Deviance and Perspectives in the Behavioral Sciences) is professor and chairman of the department of psychiatry at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and director of psychiatric services for the University Hospitals of Cleveland, Ohio. He is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Medical School and interned at Bryn Mawr Hospital, Pa. Following residency at Butler Hospital, Providence, R. I., he was a fellow in psychiatry at Harvard University, Boston, and a teaching fellow at Boston Psychoanalytic Institute. He took further postgraduate training at Detroit Psychoanalytic Institute. Dr. Bond is an advisor to the director, National Institutes of Health, and president of the Grant Foundation, New York, N. Y. He was formerly dean of Case Western School of Medicine. Ewald W. Busse (The Older Population and the Aged Patient) is J. P. Gibbons Professor and chairman of the department of psychiatry at Duke University. A graduate of the Washington University School of Medicine, he interned at St. Louis City Hospital. Following his residency at Colorado Psychopathic Hospital, he taught at the University of Colorado as head of psychosomatic medicine. He is past chairman of the Training Commission of the Advisory Council of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. He is also director of the Duke University Center for the Study of Aging and Human Development. Luther Christman (Community Resources-The Role of Other Professionals) is professor and dean of the Vanderbilt University School of Nursing and director of nursing for the Vanderbilt University Hospital. A bachelor-degree graduate of Temple University School of Nursing, he took postgraduate training in clinical psychology at Temple and received his Ph.D. in sociology and anthropology from Michigan State University. He.· has served as consultant to the National Institute of Mental Health Community Services and Research Branch. He formerly was director of nursing at Yankton State Hospital, South Dakota; consultant to the Michigan Department of Mental Health; and associate professor at the University of Michigan School of Nursing. 161 John A. Ewing (Recognition and Management of Psychiatric Emergencies) is professor and chairman of the department of psychiatry at the University of North Carolina. A graduate of University of Edinburgh College of Medicine, he interned at Preston Royal Infirmary. He completed his psychiatric training at Cherry Knowle Hospital (England), the University of Durham and the University of London. Before coming to the United States, he was senior registrar at Cherry Knowle Hospital. He has served as psychiatrist for the North Carolina Alcoholic Rehabilitation Center. David R. Hawkins(What Referring Physicians Can Expect from the Psychiatrist) is professor and chairman of the department of psychiatry at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. A graduate of the University of Rochester School of Medicine, he interned at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester. Following his residency at the University of Rochester, he took further postgraduate training at the University of London Institute of Psychiatry and the Wash-ington Psychoanalytic Institute. Dr. Hawkins was formerly professor of psychiatry at the University of North Carolina. Marc H. Hollender (Physical Illness, the Family and the Physician) is professor of psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania. A graduate of the University of Illinois College of Medicine, he interned at Cook County Hospital, Chicago. Following his residency at the Neuropsychiatric Institute of the University of Illinois, he took further post-graduate training at the Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis, where he later became a staff member. Dr. Hollender was formerly associate professor of psychiatry at the University of Illinois and professor and chairman of the department of psychiatry at the State University of New York in Syracuse. William W. Jepson (Social and Community Psychiatry and its Effect on the Family) is chief of psychiatry at Hennepin County General Hospital and program director of the Hennepin County Mental Health Center, Minneapolis. A graduate of Cornell University Medical College, he interned at the Yale-New Haven Hospital. Following his residency at the University of Cincinnati, he became an instructor at the University of Minnesota and is presently assistant professor of psychiatry. -162 George Kriegman (Sexual Counseling in Medical Practice), guest editor of this issue, is clinical professor of psychiatry at MCV. A graduate of the University of Illinois College of Medicine, he did his internship and residency at St. Elizabeth's Hospital, Washington, D. C. He is a graduate of the Washington Psychoanalytic Institute and the Washington School of Psychiatry. Dr. Kriegman was formerly lecturer at the School of Social Work, Virginia Commonwealth University, and the University of Virginia and instructor at the Washington Psychoanalytic Institute. He is consultant to the Family and Children's Services Society in Richmond. Zigmond M. Lebensobn (Whom, Why and How to Refer) is chief of psychiatry at Sibley Memorial Hospital, Wash-ington, D. C., and clinical professor of psychiatry at Georgetown University. A graduate of Northwestern University Medical School, he interned at Cook County Hospital, Chicago. Lederer (Psychiatric Issues in Therapeutic Abortion) is acting director of the Seymour D. Vestermark Division of Intramural Training, St. Elizabeth's Hospital, National Institute of Mental Health. A graduate of the University of Chicago, Rush Medical College, he interned at Cincinnati General Hospital. After his residency at the University of Cincinnati, he taught there and was professor of psychiatry at Georgetown University. Until earlier this year, Dr. Lederer was professor and chairman of the department of psychiatry at the Medical College of Virginia. Heinz E. Lehmann (Psychopharmacological Procedures) is clinical and research director at Douglas Hospital, Montreal, Canada. A graduate of the University of Berlin Medical School, he interned in Berlin and at Children's Hospital, Montreal. After his residency at Douglas Hospital, he became a staff member. Dr. Lehmann is also professor of psychiatry at McGill University, Montreal; special lecturer, School of Social Work, McGill University; and visiting professor at the University of Cincinnati. He is recipient of the Albert Lasker Award of the Albert and Mary Lasker Foundation. 163 Milton Rosenbaum (Family Tension and Psychophysiological Illness) is professor of psychiatry at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and director of psychiatry, Bronx Municipal Hospital Center, New York. A graduate of the Uni-versity of Cincinnati College of Medicine, he interned at Cincinnati General Hospital. Following his residencies in neurology and psychiatry at Boston City Hospital, McLean Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, he took further postgraduate training at the Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis. Dr. Rosenbaum was formerly professor of psychiatry at the University of Cincinnati; director of psychiatry, Jewish Hospital, Cincinnati; and visiting professor at Hebrew University, Jerusalem. Melvin Sabshin (The Physician's Role in the Assessment of Normal Behavior) is professor and chairman of the depart-ment of psychiatry at the University of Illinois College of Medicine. A graduate of Tulane University School of Medicine, he interned at Charity Hospital, New Orleans. Following his residency at Tulane University, he was a research fellow there and a research psychiatrist and assistant director at the Institute of Psychosom1tics and Psychiatric Research, Michael Reese Hospital, Chicago.
