The f o l  1 owina concl usions were reached : Preparat ion Phase (!lay 1 t o .  Cctober 1)  1. Pre l iminary  data from the p r e ~ a r a t i o n  phase s i t e s  i nd i ca te  t h a t  coverage of e l i g i b l e  women more than doubled i n  the one month of progran a c t i v i  ty. Tabi es are appended. 2. Informal  conversations w i t h  v i l l a g e  leaders, hea l th  o f f i c i a l s  and p r o j e c t  s ta f f  i n d i c a t e  en thus ias t i c  acceptance of p i l l /condom k i t s  by almost a1 1  o f  the wotxen sged 15-a9 who were l i v i n a .  w i t h  t h e i r  husbands and were no t  a i ready contracept ing o r  t r y i n g  t o  become precjnent. Only about one ha l f  of the wonen who d i d  no t  wish add i t i ona l  chi ldrer? were contraceot ing p r i o r  t o  household d i s t r i b u t i o n  o f  p i l l s  and condoms. Now, near l y  a l l  of these have received p i l l i condom k i t s .  3.  A fo l low-UD survey o f  the orecarat ion s i t e  i s  being c a r r i e d  c u t  i n  September t c  ve r i - f y  actual  usage of contracept ives d i s t r i bu ted .  4. This sample w i l l  cover about 270 enumeration d i s t r i c t s  (ED) on Cheju I s 1  and (populat ion 400,000) and about 89 enmera t ion  d i s t r i c t s  i n  the con t ro l  area. The Korean Bureau o f  S t a t i s t i c s  w i l l  increase the  57; r census t o  25% i n  these areas t o  ensure a l a rge  enough sample t o  measure incremental changes i n  f e r t i l i t y  over t he  next  three years of p r o j e c t  operation. 3. A formal proposal f o r  the  Cheju phase o f  the p r o j e c t  i s  under preoarat ion - a t  t h i s  time. Problems t o  be an t i c ipa ted  invo lve  ROK i n t e r e s t  i n  charging the  household f o r  the  i n i t i a l  supply of p i l l s  and f o r  resupply as we l l  as ROK M i n i s t r y  o f  Health emphasis upon I U D  and s t e r i l i z a t i o n  services. Since USAID has recen t l y  re jec ted  ROK requests fo r  A I D  purchased o ra l  contraceptives, 1 we may have t o  make special  prov is ions fo r  any o ra l s  used as p a r t  o f  the Cheju experiment. r -  East West Populat ion I n s t i t u t e  1. EWPI has agreed t o  scale down t h e i r  requests f o r  AID g ran t  assistance / .*.--- - f .  i n  FY 76 t o  t he  600 thousand l e v e l  o r  lower and t o  generate spec i f f c  p r o j e c t  proposals f o r  possi  b7e cont ract  funding. This would permi t  i greater  concordance w i t h  PHA/POP p r i o r i t i e s .  I I 2. A conference j o i n t l y  sponsored w i t h  the U n i v e r s i t y  o f  Kyoto i s  scheduled i n  Japan e a r l y  i n  December t o  t r e a t  aspects o f  the f e r t i l i t y  t i t r a n s i t i o n  i n  Asia. PHA/POP should be represented so t h a t  discussions o f  i the determinants o f  f e r t i l i t y  trends inc lude an i n  depth examination o f  f am i l y  p l  annihg programs. 3. Staff a t  EWPI i s  a t  present absorbed i n  many a c t i v i t i e s  which are n e i t h e r  AID funded nor LDC or iented.  Addi t iona l  core support funds w i l l  be sought from NICHD through a proposal which i s  being prepared fo r  FY 77 ! L' , . submission. Current EWPI p r i o r i t y  p ro j ec t s  inc lude  s tud ies o f  premar i ta l  co i t us  a t  the  Un i ve rs i t y  of Hawaii,, h i s t o r i c a l  demography o f  the Uni ted States and Japan, and eva luat ion o f  fami l y  p lanning serv ices i n  the  Sta te  o f  Hawaii. - - 4. Andrew Mason, (Ph.D. Un i ve rs i t y  o f  Michigan, 1975). an economist has been h i r ed  t o  expand the  m u l t i - d i s c i o l i n a r y  character  o f  the  I n s t i t u t e .  He has had no p r i o r  overseas experience but i s  h igh ly  recomended by Locke Anderson and others f o r  h i s  work on models o f  household s ize,  saving and income. The quest ion i s  whether EtJPI focus on economic benef i ts  of fami ly planning w i l l  be strong enough t o  incorporate  h i s  i n t e res t s .  5. One always i s  impressed by the wide d i f fus ion  of research i n t e r e s t s  D i s t r i b u t i o n  '- - October -1 5,  1975 a t  EWPI.
