Over the course of the summer, Nova Southeastern University went through a reorganization process that involved the creation of some new colleges and departments. This process was intended to create more closely related clusters of majors and to foster an improved connection between our graduate and undergraduate programs. You are receiving this Email because according to our records you are a student in one of the programs in the department. This means you could be completing an undergraduate degree or minor, or a graduate degree or certificate. Here are the degree programs in the Department of History and Political Science:  Bachelor of Arts (B.A.): History International Studies Philosophy Political Science Bachelor of Science (B.S.): Legal Studies  Master of Science (M.S.): National Security Affairs   We are also the home of numerous minors and a graduate certificate program in National Security Affairs. This newsletter is one of the new initiatives in our department, and it is intended as a medium for sharing useful information with students and faculty. Our newsletter categories will include highlights of selected students, faculty, and courses. Among other things, it will also have information about upcoming events, scholarships, and career opportunities. HIST 3010 EV1 Constitutional History I HIST 3450 EV1 History of American Immigration HIST 4999 EV1 Senior Seminar in History POLS 3100 DA1 Political Theory  Model United Nations  Andrew Jones (Team President) This fall marked Nova Southeastern University’s third triumphant return to the Florida Model United Nations (FMUN) conference hosted at Santa Fe College in Gainesville, where we came home with an Outstanding Delegate Award and a Distinguished Delegation Award. This FMUN was exciting because our team was comprised of six new delegates, and four returning delegates, including myself.  Personally, as a Senior Delegate, this was my third FMUN conference and serving as the President of our Model U.N team I am immensely proud of our accomplishments at FMUN and the success we’ve had at recruiting new students into our legacy.   I had the honor of representing Argentina in the Human Rights Council where we worked on the issues of Equality for Disabled Populations and the 2015 Developmental Framework for Addressing Women's Inequality. As at every FMUN conference, the most exciting facet of this opportunity is being able to interact and work with like-minded students from across the state, who are actively engaging their passion and drive for discussing international relations and formulating solutions to solve international issues. This competitive scholastic setting has allowed every delegate the opportunity to raise awareness regarding international issues, promote critical thinking and open discourse as related to these issues, and most importantly has given the Delegates of Nova Southeastern University the opportunity to raise the profile of NSU both locally and nationally, while showcasing how smart, capable, and talented our students are.   Chantel Grant (Team Secretary) After coercing my friends to embark on this journey with me, we learned that in a couple of weeks we would be heading to Gainesville for our very first Model United Nations conference. We were ecstatic to be together for a weekend, but extremely nervous. The senior members of the team completely shocked us with their attentiveness. All of our questions were answered and our faculty advisor, Prof. Nelson Bass, exercised an indescribable amount of patience.   By the time we arrived in Gainesville, we were nervous but definitely prepared. Within the first couple of hours at the conference, our President, Andrew Jones, was beaming with pride. I understood then what I did not before: NSU’s Model United Nations team amassed such success because it is a family. Well, ‘we’ are a family.  We take care of each other, and we know that to do something well, you have to love it and have fun. All the members of Nova International Relations Association are passionate, fun-loving, and driven students. I highly encourage students to try it out; trust me, you will not regret it. I have only been to one conference, and my friends and I are already planning for the next. Now, when the team’s successes are announced, an uncontrollable smile is plastered across my face. Alumni News  Andre Sinclair, M.S., graduate of the National Security Affairs master’s program in NSU’s College of Art, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS) has joined the federal government’s Internal Revenue Service (IRS) as an investigative analyst…   Sherika Hornes, M.S., alumna of the NSU’s College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (CHASS) has been named an Administrative Officer with the Office of Foreign Missions with the U.S. Department of State in Los Angeles, CA. Hornes is a graduate of the master’s program in National Security Affairs… CAHSS Wounded Warrior Alum Joins the  IRS as Investigative Analyst  CAHSS Alumna Named Administrative  Officer with U.S. Department of State     John W. Stevens III began his studies at Nova in 1991. At that time, he had a bunch of classes with Lester Lindley, Charles Zelden, David McNaron and Ben Mulvey.  One of the highlights of his undergraduate years was travelling with Stephen Levitt on an exchange trip to London in November 1993.  After completing a B.S. in Legal Studies, John attended Nova Southeastern University’s Shepard Broad Law School and graduated in 1998 with honors. In his third year of law school, he was managing editor of the ILSA Journal of International and Comparative Law.   With more than seventeen years’ experience, John has built up a very successful law practice in Plantation that now has seven lawyers, and more than twenty non-lawyer employees. John has experience in mediation, arbitration, trial, and appeals for issues requiring civil litigation. He represents cases at the state and federal levels, and in particular those that involve condominium and homeowners associations, commercial, and real estate law.  John has remained engaged with the community. He was Vice-Chairman of the Town of Davie Planning and Zoning Board, a member of the Davie Economic Advisory Council and the Fort Lauderdale International Airport Advisory Board.   Let Me Introduce Myself  Student Tiffany Smith    As an undergraduate student at NSU, I have had a number of opportunities that have enabled me to gain valuable skills and create lasting memories. My most memorable experience was my study abroad trip to Geneva, Switzerland. While there, I had the opportunity to challenge myself and venture outside of my comfort zone. I was able to develop my French and learn about globalization. I embarked on adventures that took me skiing in the Alps and sitting in the audience of the Paris Symphony.   Aside from my semester abroad, I have made the Dean’s List every semester since I started in the fall of 2013. Last year, the Alpha Chi Honor Society inducted me as a member, and I serve now as an officer. NSU has exposed me to various leadership roles, which have permitted me to develop my character. I also became a member, and then Secretary, of the co-ed business fraternity, Alpha Kappa Psi. Through this organization, I worked with a number of committees and helped to plan events, which promote business professional ideals to other students.   In addition to all of this, I have had the pleasure of working at the Career Development Office and the Office of Student Media, two departments that offer plenty of opportunities to become involved with the planning stage of NSU events. One such event is the annual NSU Multimedia Conference, which welcomes high school students to the campus. Ultimately, Nova Southeastern University has given me the chance to explore my interests through extracurricular activities as well as through the legal studies curriculum.   Adjunct Faculty David W. Hays, D.P.A., SPHR, SHRM-SCP I have over twenty years' experience teaching graduate-level courses in National Security Affairs, Business Administration, Health Care Administration, Human Resource Development, Human Resource Management, Leadership, Organizational Behavior, Public Administration, and Research Methods. I currently teach Research and Evaluation in National Security Affairs (NSAM 5005) and Leadership in National Security Affairs (NSAM 5007) in the National Security Affairs graduate program. I’m the recipient of the 2014 Nova Southeastern University Biomedical Informatics Program’s Golden Apple award, presented to the faculty member deemed most outstanding by the graduating class.  I retired from the Medical Service Corps, Patient Administration sub-specialty, United States Navy, after twenty-one years’ of active duty and held command-in-combat during Operation Desert Storm as executive officer of a medical collecting and clearing company, in direct support of United States Marine Corps ground troops.  I have an active research agenda, publishing articles on analytics, organizational commitment, employee engagement, job satisfaction, and emerging technologies.  I am the lead author of “Job Satisfaction of Healthcare IT Permanent Employees and Consultants”, with Jennie Lou, M.D., to be published in the Autumn 2015 issue of Society for Advancement of Management Advanced Management Journal.  I hold a Doctor of Public Administration (D.P.A.), Nova University, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida; Master of Arts, Management and Supervision (MA), Central Michigan University; Bachelor of Science (BS), Business Administration, The University of the State of New York, Albany, New York.
