Tips 4 Ulbat's Newat 4 It's a C11s Life 4 Woo Searrh 4 THE IMPACT OF EBoOKS ON LIBRARIES Stephen King's latest book, Rid-ing the Bullet, produced an ex­traordinary surge of interest in eBooks (electronic books). His eBook is the equivalent to 66 pages and it sells for $2.50 per copy. This eBook is the popular novelist's first experience with publishing books in electronic form. And it was a smash­ing success! Over 400,000 copies were sold or provided as free downloads during the first 24 hours the eBook was available. Notwith­standing this eBook's unexpected heavy sales and request, publisher Simon & Schuster and King believe eBooks will not replace the regular book as we know it in paper format. They believe the small price tag and small number of pages made this eBook unusually attractive to the con­sumer. Some organizations (e.g., Net­Library in Boulder, Colorado) are in­vesting huge amounts of money in the eBook. They, apparently, believe that there is and will be an even stronger demand for eBooks. We should expect to see the number of eBooks and pa­per format books to increase. The number of new book titles published --globally continues to increase annually. We will also witness some new titles being published in both formats (electronic and paper). What impact will the eBook have on library services provided by NSU? I believe the impact will be posi-. tive. The eBook would certainly en­hance access to and availability of spe­cific books needed by our distance education students. Owing to financial constraints, we do not acquire many duplicate copies of the same title. The publishing industry and libraries will be profoundly affected by eBooks. In my opinion, the eBook's positive and value added aspects far outweigh any nega­tive implications. To paraphrase that favorite Chinese saying, "may we live in interesting and exciting times." Instead, you can use almost any symbol for your bullet that is available with the fonts you have installed. To change the bullet character, click in the para­gra ph you want bulleted, and then click Bullets and Numbering on the Format menu. Select a bullet format, and then click Customize. Over 460 languages are repre­sented in the collections. • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • NSU Libraries Executive Council Retreat On Tuesday, March 28, in the evening, and all day on March 29th, the NSU Libraries Executive Council met away from the campus environment to work together on some of the impor­tant issues facing the libraries today and in the future. This was the first retreat of the Executive Council. Ann Meacham, a local leadership consultant, facilitated this event. The par­ticipants---Janice Gottlieb, Billie Jo Kaufman, Harriett Mac­Dougall, Peggy Richard, Donald Riggs, and Mary Paige Smith-acknowledged that they worked hard, but are certain that there will be positive results for NSU Libraries. EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT SHERYL PERRY WOMACK Sheryl Perry Womack is the Serials Manager in the Law Library. During her employment at NSU she has seen the transition from Kardex to Datatrek and now to Novacat. She loves to read, and her favorite authors are James Patterson, Mary Higgins Clark, LAW LIBRARY and John Grisham. Sheryl is married and the mother of five children ranging in age from 13-18. Her eldest gradu· ated from high school last year. She also enjoys spending time with her twin nieces. -CONNECTING ... SCHO O L'S IN As if working full-time and raising families is not enough, many of our NSU libraries personnel have de­cided to return to school. The following are examples of library employees leading double and triple lives. Pam Beegle, Einstein Library, has been accepted into NSU's Programs in Higher Education. She will start coursework in April, and hopes to com­plete her doctorate in Higher Education Administration in 2003. Beth Cohen, Einstein Library, is study­ing for a Master's in Business Admini­stration, and expects to complete all coursework in 2002. Tanya Feddern, HPD Library, is finish­ing her Master's in Occupational Ther­apy at NSU. She is also in her second semester of the Master's in Library and Information Science program at Univer­sity of South Florida. Way to go, Tanya! Aysen Gurrea, HPD Library, is a senior at NSU's Farquhar Center College of Professional and Liberal Studies. She will be graduating on April 30, 2000. Aysen has been ac­� cepted into NSU's College of Osteopathic Medicine doc­.. toral program, and will be starting classes this summer. Awesome, Aysen! Kathy Maxson, Manager of the Ocean­ography Library, is working towards completing her Master's degree in Li­brary and Information Science from the University of South Florida. She hopes to receive her degree this fall. Kathy is also working on a website for inde­pendent study credits. Ivelisse Medina, East Campus Branch Library, is enrolled in the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale. She is pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Multimedia, and hopes to graduate in 2002. Jessica Nelson, HPD Library, is pursu­ing her Master's degree in Speech and Language Pathology at NSU. She plans to graduate in April 2000. Shana Sachs, HPD Library, is pursuing her Master's degree in Speech and Language Pathology at NSU. Her practicum focused on bibliographic in­struction and distance education. Johanna has been with the Einstein Library since 1991, starting as a part-time Reference Librarian. Later she became Head of Reference and is currently the Head of Distance Library Services. Congratula­tions, Dr. Tunon! Congratulations to Daniel Nutter, Law Library, on completing his JD Degree! Daniel has worked in the Law Library since 1993, starting as Evening Circulation Manager, and then promoted to AcquiSitions Manager. In 1999, he returned to part-time work in order to have more time to go to school. He has taken the Bar exam and is now waiting for the results. Daniel is also engaged to be married. The cats make their way to our doors after having been left by departing students or dropped off by neighbors with "extra" cats. These feline souls wander our grounds frightened and hungry hiding under modulars and in air ducts both depending on humans for food scraps and fearing the injury that we could in­flict on their little bodies. Shadow (a l s o  known a s  Smokey for his perfectly even gray color) has been fed by people from the Microlab and the Library. He seems to favor leftover lunches such as pizza and ham rather than the carefully placed cans of cat food that have often been left for him. Shadow became more friendly and less fearful as day by day we tried to win his confidence. Our feeding program has been a modest success; you can see Shadow hanging out with the crowds by Jamaican Me Crazy and the picnic tables outside of the Parker Building still begging and still looking proud.
