Book 6.http://nsuworks.nova.edu/nsudigital_connecting/6NOVA SOUTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES NEWSLETTER Volume 4, Issue 3 August 2002 MESSAGE FROM THE VICE PRESIDENT for Information Services & University Librarian When Beth asked me to write my message for this newsletter on the topic of the tuition remission benefit offered to NSU employees, I welcomed the opportunity. Employees of institutions/organizations are normally provided various benefits. The ones that quickly come to mind are medical and retirement. NSU goes.a step farther by providing a benefit that will pay and repay many dividends; that is, tuition remission. The cost for courses at private institutions of higher education is usually higher than that at public colleges/universities. Conversely, the size of classes at private colleges/universities is normally much smaller than those at public colleges /universities; thus, the learning process is enhanced in the smaller classes. Our society places a high premium on academic degrees. Employers tend to give the edge to job applicants with a degree or two. In order to be a professional librarian, for example, one must have the master's degree in library/information science from an accredited American Library Association school. And the education beat goes on! Imagine being able to work full time and earn the Ph.D. simultaneously' Imagine working full time and earning the M.B.A.! Both of these examples are real, and they recently occurred in the NSU Libraries. Earning a degree while working full time in the NSU Libraries is a tremendous benefit. Notwithstanding the importance of becoming more marketable getting your first, second, or third degree, we should not forget that we can also take a course or two on a topic that we simply want to learn. In sum, the tuition remission benefit enables one "to learn and earn" concurrently. Of course, it is difficult to take courses while working, but "What is the alternative?" Donald E. Brandon Gardner, LRfTC, is attending Nova Southeastern University majoring in Biology through the Farquhar Center for Undergraduate Studies. He is expected to graduate in May 2003. Douglas Gordon, LRfTC, has begun taking classes in the Center for Psychological Studies. Jaime Hilliard, LRfTC, is attending graduate school at NSU working on a degree in Marine Biology. She started her fourth quarter in July, and attends classes at the NSU Oceanographic Center located in John U. Lloyd Park in Dania Beach. She recently took a weeklong trip to Bel ize to study Coral Reef Ecology, and also did research on Brittle Stars. Coral reef ecology and marine mammals are her main interests within the field of Marine Biology. She graduated in May 2001 from Coastal Carolina University in Conway, SC, with two degrees: BS in Marine Science and a BS in Biology, with a minor in Chemistry. Her anticipated graduation date is fall of 2003. Carey Hunt, LRfTC, is enrolled in the eMBA program and hopes to graduate in three years. She did her undergraduate studies in French at I'universite Laval in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada and her MLS at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Carey wants to specialize in Finance and use the skills acquired in conjunction with her library degree. Tanya Lopez, LRfTC, is currently a junior at NSU majoring in English and Psychology. Leonard Onyeonoro, East Campus Library, received the Master of Science in Human Resource Management MS/HRM degree from NSU in July 2002. Congratulations, Leonard! He received an MPA degree (Master in Public Admin­istration) from Howard University, Washington, D.C. and a BS in Political Science from the University of Calabar, Nigeria. Jason Rosenberg, Law Library, graduated from the University of Central Florida with a BS in Business Administration in May of 2001. He is now pursuing a Masters in Business Administration at NSU and hopes to graduate at the end of 2003. Maxine Scheffler, Law Library, will begin taking courses in August in Paralegal Studies. She will be taking courses at night and does not know when she will graduate. Hang in there, Maxine! Michael Shires, LRfTC, is currently a non-degree seeking student in the Graduate School of Computer and Information Sciences at NSU. His goal is to earn a Masters Degree in Management Information Systems (MIS). His undergraduate degree, BA in History, and his graduate degree, MLlS, were from the University of Alberta. KENNEDY PROFESSIONAL MATTERS HPD LIBRARY: Janice Gottlieb attended the Solinet workshop on "Library Security", in Tampa, Florida on May 13 & 14, 2002. LA W LIBRARY: Donna Struthers wrote an article in The Book Docket for April 2002 titled, "Overdues? Here's How to Check in Your Record." Carol Yecies also wrote an article for the Book Docket in May 2002 titled, "Finding Older Sections of the Florida Administrative Code in the Florida Administrative Weekly." She also did a presentation on Westlaw in Advanced Legal Research class. lisa Smith-Butler is teaching a summer session of Advanced Legal Research. Billie Jo Kaufman attended both the Florida Law Libraries Directors Meeting and the Local Advisory Committee for AALL annual meeting in Orlando. She taught Criminal Procedure for Online Aample and a summer session of Advanced Legal Research. She was recently promoted to Associate Professor. Roy Balleste did a presentation of PowerPoint and CALI in Advanced Legal Research ciass. Roy also wrote an article, "The Future of Artificial Intelligence, Virtual Libraries and New Frontiers of Service" for the October 2002 issue of Computers in Libraries. Donna Struthers attended Florida III Innovative User's Group meeting at Stetson Law School in SI. Petersburg, Florida. Ray Andrade, Roy Balleste, Wally DiCola, Billie Jo Kaufman, and Jason Rosenberg attended CALI in Chicago, Illinois. Billie Jo and Roy did a presentation on "Virtual Personalities in law Libraries: Today's Technology, Tomorrow's Education." The presentation was written into an article for the June issue of AAll Spectrum. Meli Balleste attended the Skill Path conference for Managers and Supervisors. Rhonda Gold did a presentation on International Legal Research at the Costa Rica Summer Program as well as a presentation for the Advanced Legal Research Class on U.N. and treaty materials. Rhonda also wrote an article, "World News on the World Wide Web" for the SEAALL newsletter, V. 27, No.2 Spring, 2002. Sarah Tabor was a speaker for the Advanced Legal Research Class; the topic was Legislative History. LRITC: The following LRITC employees attended the ALA Conference held in Atlanta from June 14-17: Mou Chakraborty, Tiffany Griffin, Lia Hemphill, Jim Hutchens, Harriett MacDougall, Nora Quinlan, Laura Ramirez, Don Riggs, Amanda Roberts, and Johanna Tunon. Mou and Tiffany presented a poster session on the joint-library during the ALA Conference. Marty Mandt attended the Florida III Innovative User's Group meeting at Stetson Law School in SI. Petersburg, Florida. She also volunteered to host the next meeting in October in the library. Amanda Roberts attended two BCl training courses: Core Reference Sources on June 4 and Money! Money! Money! On June 26. Peter V. Picerno attended the annual North American Serials Interest Group meeting from June 20-23 at William and Mary University in Williamsburg, Virginia. P.nne leon attended a conference in Boston on "Building learning Communities, which focuses on information literacy and using technology to enhance learning. Johanna Tunon and Mou Chakraborty wrote a paper "Going the Distance: Solutions and Issues of Providing International Students with Library Services" which was made available at the AAOU Preconference Seminar 2002 at the Indira Gandhi National Open University, New Delhi, India. LlBRARY HAPPENINGS The first meeting of BOOKS OVER BISCOTTI on June 27" was a huge success with over 15 attendees. More people are expected for the next meeting on July 25, 7:00 - 9:00 pm. The discussion will be on the book, Atonemenl, by Ian McEwan. Facilitalors for this event are Amanda Roberts and Rebekah Benison.
