Lunch will be served. The session should be intense, interesting, and quite informative. We will 2 finish our work by 4:30 p.m. 2 As many will remember, in 1997 we developed the three­year (1997-2000) strategic plan currently being followed. It is now 3 time to update this plan. Signifi­cant progress has been made on 3 the achievement of the goals/ objectives/strategies delineated in 3· the 1997-2000 plan. Before August 21, we ex­pect to have a large amount of 4 the preliminary (and necessary) work for the plan completed. 4 Drafts of the vision, mission state­ment, goals, and �jectives will be in your hands before our plan-With the constant change libraries are experiencing and the new joint-use library scheduled for completion in 2001, the future will bring much excitement and many challenges to the NSU libraries. Do we sit back and let circum­stances determine the future of the NSU libraries? I think not. To use these tools, you must convert the metafile to a Word picture object by ungrouping and then regrouping the object. To make this process more efficient, add Word's buit­in Disassemble Picture button to the Drawing tool bar. This button is also convenient to use when you want to modify the components of a clip art object. To add the button, first display the Drawing tool bar by selecting View/ Toolbars/Drawing from the menu bar. Then select Tools/Customize from the menu bar, and click on the Commands tab. Choose Normal.dot from the Save In dropdowr. list to save the button for use in the Normal.dot template. Select Drawing from the Categories list box. F i n a l l y ,  l o c a t e  t h e  Disassemble Picture button in the Commands list box and drag it to the Drawing tool bar. To use the button, select a clip art or other object and click the Disassemble Picture button. Word automatically ungroups the object so you can work with its individual components. To regroup the object, click the Select Objects button on the Drawing toolbar and then select the objects you'd like to group. Then, select Draw/Group from the Drawing toolbar. IT'S ALL IN A DAY'S WORK HPD LIBRARY Janice Gotttieb, Mary Law­rence, Kaye Robertson, Atex Wachsler, and Mah­muda Mondol attended workshops given during the �c;;;:=;;:=� ties, indices and other perti­nent information. She also wrote an article on "Human Rights on the Internet" which was published in the South­eastern Law Librarian Spring 2000 newsletter. Florida Health Sciences Li- """""!iliir � brary Association annual con-ference in April. Janice took a course entitled "Evidence-Based Li­brarianship," an offshoot of "evidence­based medicine," which stresses deci­sion-making based on examination and evaluation of evidence from the best clinical research--Iarge, randomized clinical trials. Mary, Kaye, and Alex at­tended a very practical class called "Teaching the Adult Learner in the li­brary Setting," during which students taught a model lesson and critiqued each other. The instructor stressed the development of rapport between teacher and students and the impor­tance of speaking clearly and logically. Mahmuda studied the "New DOCLINE QuickDOC," a web-based quickDOC program for interlibrary loans. Dr. Alex Wachsler attended the 15th annual meeting of the Special Libraries Association in V\iashington, D. C. from March 15 - 17. He was particu­larly interested in the presentations dis­cussing "Invisible Web." These Internet sites cannot be accessed using tradi­tional search engines. Created by li­brarians, they can only be found by specialized, or second generation search engines. LAW LIBRARY Rhonda Gold was a guest lecturer for the Advanced Legal Research Semi­nar. Her topic on international legal materials included UN documents, trea-Diane Altimari attended the Southern Florida Women's Conference. She was also a speaker at the Institute for paralegal Education Seminar on "Strategic Use of Internet Search Engines in Florida." Maxine Scheffler and Sheryl Womack attended the 8th Annual Florida Library parapro­fessional workshop, "Libraries in the New Millenium" in Fort Pierce, Florida. Billie Jo Kaufman attended the Senior Admin­istrators Retreat in Marco Island and the Academic Retreat in Boca Raton. She and Stephen Sobchak also attended CALI in Chicago. Jaimi Stout attended NSU's Effective Communication, Conflict Management, and Leadership Skills workshops. Carat Yecies attended the National Seminars Group workshop, "Attitude Problems." EINSTEIN LIBRARY Johanna Tunon and Paul Pival gave a presentation at the 9th Off-Campus Li­brary Services Conference in Portland, Oregon in April. The topic was "/nnovative Methods of Providing Dis­tance Students with Instruction via Tech­nology". Elaine Blattner, Suzi Hayes, Lia Hemphill, Harriett MacDougall, Nora Quinlan, Peggy Richard, Don Riggs, and Johanna Tunon attended the American Library Association in Chi­cago in July. DONNA STRUTHERS, LAW LIBRARY Donna Struthers has agreed to serve as the Law Library & Technology Center/Law Cen­ter's contact for the recycling initiative. CTS is a major player in efforts to contribute in a positive way for campus wide recycling. The Law Library & Technology Center/Law Cen­ter wish to lead the campus in these efforts as demonstrative evidence in support of the AYSEN GURREA, HPD LIBRARY On August 28, 1996, I walked into the HPD Library for the first time as an undergraduate freshman desperate for student employment. That same day I began my work as the Serials Assistant. A year later my immediate supervisor left to begin medical school, and I was promoted to the staff position of Serials Manager. Ever since the first day, I dedicated my time outside of school to contribute to, what I believe to be, on the most important aspects of a university. The library is a place of understanding, enlighten­ment, and peace. Of all the things I learned during my years here, one of the most beneficial was seeing other people live out what had always been my dream. For as long as I can possibly remember becoming a physician has been the focus of my life. Working at HPD has allowed me to interact with others who have also made this profes­sion the center of their lives. Last April I concluded my studies at NSU's Farquhar Cen­ter for Undergraduate Studies and obtained my Bachelor's in Science. As I now begin my graduate studies in NSU's College of Osteopathic Medicine, I would like the entire HPD staff to know that I am grateful for what all of you have taught me, that I will miss you very much, and that I am at your service. • • • • • • •• • • • • • • • • • • • •  FOUNDATIONS AND GRANTS NORA QUINLAN, EINSTEIN LIBRARY The Foundations and Grants Collection in the Einstein Library is part of the Co­operating Collection network of the Foundation Center in New York City. Co­operating collections are intended to serve as free, funding information cen­ters in libraries, community foundations, and other nonprofit resource centers that provide a core collection of the Founda­tion Center publications and a variety of supplementary materials and services in areas useful to grantseekers. The Ein­stein Library has hosted the Cooperating Collection of the Foundation center for a number of years. It provides a wide range of resources to help those in­volved in preparing grants and soliciting funds from foundations. In addition to books and journals the collection also contains two CD-ROM databases, FCSearch and FC Scholar, and Florida 990PFs on microfiche and CD-ROM On June 11 the Einstein Library hosted a group from the Community Foundation of Broward for Donuts and Discovery: A Guided Tour through the Foundation Center Collection. Twenty­five people from nonprofit agencies in Broward, as well as Dade counties, at­tended. Nora Quinlan, Assistant Head of Distance Library Services in the Einstein Library, and caretaker of the Founda­tions and Grants Collection, gave a two hour presentation on the ins and outs of the collection and how to access the Foundation Center web site and demon­strated FCSearch. Participants got a chance to ask questions about the Foun­dation Center and the Einstein Library's services and resources. ProQuest Digital Dissertations' Gu-rent Research@NSU Frances Sardone, Einstein Library CurrentResearch@NSU is a big budget database showcasing local scholarship at its best. Provided through ProQuest, CurrentResearch@NSU is Nova South­eastern University's exclusive depository of dissertations and theses submitted by NSU students to Digital Disserta­tions. This means that our users, searching for dissertation material by our graduates after 1996, are assured full-text documents as a result of their search. ProQuest indicates that access to view/download the document is free. (flut we know better). CurrentResearch@NSU serves up full-text documents in .pdf (portable document file) format, maintaining the textual as well· as the contextual integ­rity of the document. To accommodate users on the slower end of modem con­nections and systems capacity, the first 24 pages are displayed as thumbnail preview images below the citation. Without the benefit of an abstracts within the list of documents, the pre­views also allow the document to speak for itself in terms of content. Distance and local students are well served in this regard. Search options are extreme. Ba­sic search offers three indexing fields: keyword (targeting title and abstract), author or advisor and one text box. The "Main" search page requires expert searching. Users are required to enter terms, their indexing fields (or tags) and appropriate Boolean operators. Though the "Help" button is clearly displayed, the quick reference to field names, search tags and examples is inconven­iently located at the bottom of the help page. Would this seem to correlate ad­vanced scholarship skill with advanced information literacy skills? It's tempting to think SOl In total CurrentResearch@NSU is a very use full database for users under the pressure of generating doctoral level literature reviews and partiCipating in the scholarly endeavors of their predeces­sors. Locally and at a distance, students have access to full-text, original docu­ments conveniently provided to their desktops. Users unfamiliar with expert search tactics are challenged to sharpen their research skills, with the assistance of the excellent librarians at NSU. -
