Characterization of biochemical and hygroscopic properties of flax fibres.

Abstract

International audienceThe study of flax fibres as reinforcement of polymer matrix began in early 2000 and has already demonstrated their ability to replace the glass fibres. In this study, the influence of water on the mechanical behavior of plant fibres is highlighted. The first results of measurements of mass variation of fibre packaged in controlled atmospheres moisture and temperature show that the dried fibres recover very quickly in water content (in seconds). In addition, tensile tests conducted on these fibres are used to compare their mechanical properties with those of undried fibres. Complementing this study, an estimate of the levels of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin of the fibre was performed
