College of Education Bylaws Communications Committee Reports Adjournment Meetings of the Academic Senate are open to members of the University Community. Persons attending the meeting may participate in discllssions with the consent of the Senate. Persons desiring to bring items to the attention of the Senate may do so by contacting any member of the Senate. October 11, 1995 Call to Order ACADEMIC SENATE MINUTES (Not Approved by the Academic Senate) Volume XXVII, No. 4 The meeting was called to order at 7:05 p.m. by Chair Len Schmaltz. Secretary Jan Cook called the roll and declared a quorum present. Approval of Minutes Motion XXVII-22 by Senator Razaki (second, Gipperich) to approve the Minutes of September 27, 1995 carried on a voice vote. Chairperson's Remarks The faculty senators received in their packets a memo from the chair asking them to indicate one of three faculty assembly committees they would like to serve on. Chair Len Schmaltz asked that the forms be filled out and returned to the Academic Senate office secretary after the meeting. Vice Chairperson's Remarks Vice Chair Chris Harrison thanked Provost Urice for meeting with him regarding publishing of teachers' names in the class registrations directory. More departments published teachers' names in the fall 1996 directory than did in the spring 1995 directory. Provost Urice promised beginning this fall, there will be more stringent consequences in the future for those departments that do not list teachers' names in the registration directory. Student Government Association President's Remarks SGA President Ryan Koehl thanked President Strand for attending the Student Leader Roundtable. A student steering committee will be formed to review the Campus Facilities Enhancement project. The SGA is proposing a task force be formed and coordinated with the Financial Office to study financial aid. Administrators' Remarks President Strand reported on the Board of Trustees appointments . Appointments should be announced within the next ten days; they will be sent for approval by the Illinois Senate in November. Orientation by the Governor's Office will be in late November or early December. He also reported 1llinois Board of Higher Education staff members toured the ISU campus on Friday, October 6. Action Items: 1. Approval of Student Appointments to External Committees Motion XXVII-23 by Senator Harrison (second, Johnston) to approve the student appointments to the external committees carried on a voice vote. Guidelines for Selection of Senate Faculty Representative to ISU Foundation Senator McCaw, Chair of the Rules Committee, presented guidelines for the election of the Senate faculty representative to the ISU Foundation. The guidelines have been discussed with Judith Riggs, Executive Director of the ISU Foundation. - -2. College of Education Bylaws 2 Academic Senate Minutes October 11, 1995 Vol. XXVII, NO.4 Senator Harrison, member of the Rules Committee, presented the revised College of Education Bylaws. Discussion on the Bylaws followed. Communications Senator Johnson read the following statement in memory of John W. Foster: It is with sadness that I inform you of the passing of our recently retired colleague, John W. Foster, last Monday. John was unique in our profession for he joined us in 1982 after decades of being a professional Geologist. I remember well his initial trepidation on entering the classroom, and also how quickly he adapted to and came to enjoy the classroom situation. Students, too, quickly learned to appreciate John Foster and the value of "real world" experience he shared with them. It did not matter whether John was teaching an Introductory Geology course to General Education students or a Graduate course in Geohydrology, his courses were in demand. Beyond the classroom, John's contributions to Illinois State University were exceptional. He was Acting Department Chair for two years, the driving force behind our successful Masters in Geohydrology, and co-inventor of the first patents granted to Illinois State University. I ask the Academic Senate to pause for a moment of silence in honor of and in memory of John W. Foster. Committee Reports Academic Affairs Committee Senator Walker reported the committee met with Dr. Peter Bergstrom, chair of the University Curriculum Committee, to review the B.A. and B.S. requirements proposal. The Academic Affairs Committee has encouraged the UCC to schedule at least one forum on the proposal. Written responses regarding the proposal are due to the UCC by November 1. Discussion of the proposed changes with the university community will be on November 15. The UCC will present the proposal to the Academic Affairs Committee December 1.
