Reality Based Teaching In Technology Education

Abstract

Technology education is a diverse and dynamic academic discipline. As such it is virtually impossible to possess and maintain expertise in all that it encompasses. One method of helping a teacher gain proper insight and perspective into the essential content of a course is through participation in an extemship. This study called for getting the teacher out of the classroom and into industry (specifically the design/engineering field) in order to witness first hand the skills and processes necessary. Seven design/engineering firms were visited and consulted. Data gathered from interviews and observations can be applied to develop a more relevant technology curriculum
