The French future tense was formed after the pattern of the conditional, not the other way round: morphologically, the conditional is not the product of a fusion of the French future + the imperfect (as often stated), but the product of the fusion of [the infinitive + the imperfect of 'avoir'].Chapitre consacré aux origines du conditionnel.
