Abstract
This document refers to the technology of zinc and copper application in the exterior
surrounding of buildings. For this purpose, a bibliographical research was developed, based
mostly on technical standards, producer’s publications and applicators of these two
materials. We tried to frame some solutions that are common in Europe, mainly France
and Germany, with existing practices and Portuguese legislation.
The initial approach begins with a brief historical reference about the non-ferrous metals
over time, its discovery and evolution until today. An indication of its main features,
manufacture and processing, are important to understand their behavior when applied at
building sites. The subject of application technology in engaging outside buildings, it’s
associated with roofs and facades. We refer the basic principles for application of the
systems in buildings, highlighting the pitches, materials compatibility, shaping and
relationship with river water flow, thermal insulation, physical and mechanical behavior.
The document includes the study of one of the most common insulation systems in
Portugal, the Standing Seam system, including details of admissible lengths and widths,
mountings dimensioning, assembly on building sites and construction details.
In the final chapter of this document, we refer the advantages of these systems uses in the
recovery and rehabilitation of buildings, as well as a brief statement of the costs involved
