This issoftware that gets downloaded from theinternet onto a user's machine, encrypts some of the user’s files,and then demands payment in return for the key to unlock thefiles. The story was triggered by a report from a person inRochdale, who had been the victim of the "Arhiveus" scam, inwhich the victim is required to make a purchase of elicit drugsfrom a web site in order to retrieve files.Upcoming EventsConference 25-28th June 2006The Faculty of Business and Informatics is hosting the InformingScience and Information Technology Education Conference, 25thto 28th June 2006, in the Mary Seacole Building. They presented their findingsto the House of Commons on May 4th 2006. On Monday 27th February 2006 Dr. David Kreps was one of twospeakers at the Parliamentary IT Committee (PITCOM) Meeting:"ICT For the Socially Excluded", House of Commons, London PITCOM typically attracts up to 100 attendees with a mix of MPs,members of the House of Lords, plus a good number of industryand trade association representatives (Microsoft, IBM, Sun, BT,Nortel, Marconi, IEE, Intellect) and independent PITCOM memberssuch as academics.Dr Apostolos Antonacopoulos has been invited as Keynote Speakerat the 9th biannual CIFED (Conference International Francophonesur l'Ecrit et le Document) at the University of Fribourg, Switzerland(September 2006). May 2006. ‘The impact ofcomputers on changing notions of language, language learningand language pedagogy.’ In December 2005 Huw Jarvis was invited to the Teachers ofEnglish as a Foreign Language Indonesia (TEFLIN) InternationalConference, Yogyakarta, Indonesia as plenary speaker. ‘Computers:conceptualisation, change and delivery in low technology contexts.’With support from The British Council, Indonesia.ProjectsCABWEB Project & CABWEB Portal  - www.cabweb.netThe Collaborations Across Borders project is now completed. TheCABWEB portal built during the project is in good shape, withactive networks and collaborations running there. In total, 1921students took part and expressed overwhelming satisfaction withthese activities. Overall CAB has helped generate 10 refereed conference papers, 5 journal articles, 2 refereed works, 1 symposium and 1 book chapter to date (all involving authors from Salford).If you would like to set up a collaboration space for cross-institu-tional student collaborations, please contact Janice Whatley orFrances Bell (j.e.whatley@salford.ac.uk or f.bell@salford.ac.uk). FundingDr. Haifa Takruri-Rizk and Dr. Kate Booth have secured a grantfrom the ESF to look at BME participation in the Northwest. Thepurpose of the project is to examine, analyse and evaluate the progression, degree attainment and employment paths of Blackand Minority Ethnic (BME) Science, Engineering and Technology(SET) students in the Northwest.  It is evident from previousresearch that although BME groups are not necessarily disadvan-taged in terms of representation in SET degrees, they do not havethe same levels of achievement as their white counterparts. The Programme included more than 40 papers, workshopsand posters as well as keynote papers from Prof. Phil Hodkinson,University of Leeds and Prof. Paul Trowler, University of Lancaster.The Conference was brought to a close by Prof. Ian McNay,University of Greenwich, who reflected on our developments since2004 and commended the collegial educational ‘community ofpractice’ that now exists at Salford. Dr. Nikolaos Tsagarakis received hisDiploma in Electrical Engineering in 1995from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki inGreece and his MSc and PhD in Roboticsand Haptic Technology in 1997 and 2000respectively from the University of Salford.He is currently Research Fellow in theSchool of Computing, Science and Engineering working in the areaof rehabilitation, medical robotics and haptic systems.
