By band-pass filtering the LFPs (20 – 40seconds of recording at each site) and applying a continu-ous wavelet transform on the filtered signals, we detectedthe presence of marked intermittency in the theta fre-quency band (4 – 8 Hz) at many of these sites (see Fig. 1).We have also computed the temporal variations of wave-let power to demonstrate that the intermittency is charac-terized by sudden bursts of power separated by intervalsof very low power or almost quiescent periods. In addi-tion, the kurtosis of the probability density functions ofthe LFP signals was used as a measure of the degree ofintermittency at each site and revealed a wide variationranging from 3.4 to 37.5. The larger the kurtosis, thegreater is the intermittency in the signal. The origin andsignificance of the intermittency are presently unclear.
