The title of his talkis "Macalester Lessons."  Yeukai Mudzi is the senior classspeaker.  Mudzi, from Zimbabwe, is an Economics major witha minor in Anthropology.Commencement will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 12, atthe college. Macalester will be streaming commencement atmacalester.edu/commencement/ (http://www.macalester.edu/commencement/) Check back for updates.Weatherford, a cultural anthropologist who has worked withcontemporary groups in places such as Bolivia and theAmazon with emphasis on the role of tribal people in worldhistory, has written several books including The History ofMoney, Indian Givers: How the Indians of the Americas Transformed the World, and the internationalbestseller, Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World, which has been translated into 20 languages. He and his wife are legal residents of Mongolia, where he has concentrated his work in recent years.  In 2007,Mongolian President Enkhbayar awarded him that nation’s highest medal, the Order of the Polar Star, and in2010 he received the Friendship Medal from President Elbegdorj.“Jack Weatherford’s contributions to Macalester College and the world, for that matter, include telling usabout the importance of Mongolia’s history, being a prolific author, and perhaps most important, being abeloved professor of anthropology,” said President Brian Rosenberg.  “He is the epitome of what Macalesterprofessors strive to be – someone who has the curiosity to learn and the talent to pass both that curiosity andhis knowledge along to others.”Mongolia honored Weatherford for his scholarly contributions to Mongolian culture with the publication oftwo books, including Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World and The Secret History of theMongol Queens, the first book written on the daughters of Genghis Khan.  Because 2012 is the 850thanniversary of the birth of Genghis Khan, the office of the President of Mongolia arranged for audio bookrecordings of Weatherford’s books, Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World and The SecretHistory of the Mongol Queens, to be played at all Mongolia’s sacred sites. Mongolia recently announced the creation of a foundation and prize in honor of Weatherford that will beawarded annually to the author of the best work of scholarship about Mongolian history or culture written inthe Mongolian language.  Weatherford has taught at Macalester since 1983.
