Lecture and Book Signing by Dr. Peter Hotez – September 18, 2012 from 12:00 – 1:30 p.m.  The TMC Library will host a year-long series of free lectures in fall 2012 and spring 2013. The theme of the Medical Ethics series is Vaccines, Epidemics, and Ethics. Local and nationally recognized experts in the field will discuss the roles of vaccines in the prevention and control of infectious diseases and epidemics.  The first lecture Forgotten People, Forgotten Diseases will be presented by Dr. Peter Hotez on Tuesday, September 18, 2012 from 12:00 – 1:30 p.m. at the TMC Library.   Dr. Hotez, founding Dean of Baylor College of Medicine‘s new National School for Tropical Medicine, will discuss access to innovations in biotechnology among the poorest people in developing countries and in Texas, and will sign copies of his book Forgotten People, Forgotten Diseases: The Neglected Tropical Diseases and Their Impact on Global Health and Development. Books will be available for purchase.  A light lunch will be provided on a first-come, first-serve basis and attendees will be eligible to enter a drawing at each event to win a Kindle E-Book reader by completing a short interactive quiz on National Library of Medicine databases such as PubMed. New Class Offered at the Library Did you know that when you sign a contract to publish an article in a journal, you often sign away your right to give copies to your students and colleagues, and even the right to post a copy in your university’s online repository? And that unless your university's library can afford to subscribe to that journal you may not even be able to access your own published work? Infectious diseases kill 13 million people worldwide every year. Therefore, controlling disease is a global medical priority. The panels in the exhibit present a unique display of postage stamps and photographs that offers a visual record of the worldwide fight against infectious diseases and the effort to eradicate those diseases through widespread vaccination. In addition to the Stamping Out Disease exhibit, The TMC Library is displaying, information and artifacts about infectious diseases: neglected tropical diseases, smallpox and polio.  Stamping Out Disease is on loan from the Texas Medical Association, History of Medicine Committee. Collectible Editions Sale The John P. McGovern Historical Collections and Research Center fall sale of collectible editions and other books started September 4, 2012. There are several early editions of Sir William Osler’s classic, The Principles and Practice of Medicine, as well as his shorter monographs such as On Chorea and Choreiform Affections and collections such as Aequanimitas.  In connection with the Medical Ethics Series: Vaccines, Epidemics and Ethics, books dealing with vaccines, infectious diseases and immunology will be featured at the sale. The sale will end in November, 2012 with books being added until then. The books are available in the main lobby area of The TMC Library, 1133 John Freeman Blvd., Houston, Texas 77030 during regular Library hours.
