This database is alsoavailable via Educationalremote access.H A M - T M C  L I B R A R Ys an integral part of one of the world’s finest centers for patient care, biomedical research, and educationin the health professions, the Houston Academy ofMedicine – Texas Medical Center (HAM-TMC) Library is honored to assist the manystudents, professionals, hospitals and educational institutions who make signif-icant contributions to the delivery of healthcare and the advancement of research inmedicine.However, the HAM-TMC Library is unlikeany other library in the world.  Serving theentire Texas Medical Center and the Houstoncommunity, the Library was initially formedthrough a merger of the collections of theHouston Academy of Medicine and BaylorCollege of Medicine and continues todaythanks to the generous support of over twentymember institutions, including two medicalschools, four schools of nursing and thirteenrenowned hospitals.  The Library is alsounique in that it is a separate non-profit insti-tution and as such has budget responsibilitiesnot normally borne by medical libraries such as build-ing rent and repairs, utilities, insur-ance and a host of other costs that wouldusually absorbed by a parent institution.The Library is beginning a new fund-rais-ing effort in order to continue our role as avital source of information for health profes-sionals in Houston and throughout the SouthCentral Region. We are committed to provid-ing equal access to biomedical informationand improving the public's access to informa-tion to enable them to make informed deci-sions about their health. As these costs rise, they conflict with the costs normally associated with a library, like journal subscriptions, book purchases, electronicresources and salaries. Since the institutions paying assessments to the HAM-TMC Library are also facing a difficult economy,it will be up to us to be creative in raising additional funds.So, in 2005, our plans include: contacting prospective donors as well as long term supporters, aggressive grant writingand a biennial Friends Dinner.With this final issue of Library Lines for 2004, I would like to wish all of you Happy Holidays and a prosperous New Year.As winter arrives and 2004 becomes a memory, I reflect on the past and look to the future. First, I would like to thank Betsy Parish for serving as the President of the Friends of the TMCLibrary for the past four years. While she will remain on the Friends Board, Rogene Gee Calvertbegins her tenure as Friends Board Chair in January 2005. The goal of the Friends is to supportthe Library through various fund-raising endeavors. The Friends recently provided the Librarywith the funding to purchase new software Raiser’s Edge®, which will equip us to be more effectivein supplementing the currently stretched library budget.WWW.LIBRARY.TMC.EDU/LIBLINESAElizabeth Eaton, PhDExecutive Director, HAM-TMC LibraryBetsy Parish Past President of the Friends of the Texas Medical Center LibraryOn November 17, 2004, Betsy Parish stepped down as President of the Friends of the Texas Medical Center Library.For four years, her stewardship of the Friends led the HAM-TMC Library in new and exciting directions: out-reach programs in consumer health for both Asians (CHIA) and Spanish Speakers (CHISS) were establishedand expanded, and the Friends confronted the issue of skyrocketing journal costs by creating and participat-ing in Adopt-a-Journal, a program in which individuals can support the journal collection by purchasing athree-year journal subscription at the institutional rate. Ms. Parish also encouraged the administration of new fundraising and marketingtactics, and the Friends recently voted to fund the Library’s acquisition and implementation of The Raiser’s Edge®, fundraising softwareused by the most successful non-profits in the country.Her efforts on behalf of HAM-TMC Library are not ending with the conclusion of her presidency. She will remain on theboard of the Friends, and has been named co-chair for the next Friends’ fundraising gala, Houston’s Most Fascinating 2005.Rogene Calvert, the Director of Personnel and Volunteer Initiatives Program in Mayor Bill White’s Administration and a veteran board member, will succeed her. Already, Ms. Calvert has convened meetings to discuss new outreach proposals; the Library is indeed fortunate in its Friends.WE STAND ON THE SHOULDERS OF GIANTSThe development of the Texas Medical Center is the focus for the Fall 2004 issue of “The HoustonReview of History and Culture.” Biographical articles on a few of Houston’s leading physicians, thetwo bachelors whose fortunes helped provide the foundation for Houston’s health-related com-plex, and the role played by the Houston Academy of Medicine-Texas Medical Center Library areall covered in this issue.From 1904, when the Harris County Medical Society formed the first Committee to arrange alocation for a medical library until now, the HAM-TMC Library has always been supported by thecollaboration of Houston philanthropists, individual physicians, schools, and hospitals. Bob is responsible forstaffing the reference desk, and maintainingthe paper and electronic kiosks. Before com-ing to the Library, Bob worked for MajorsScientific Books managing the Texas Woman’sUniversity-Houston Bookstore, and as anAssistant Buyer and Customer Service repre-sentative at the Fannin location.He received his undergraduate degree in1975 from the University of Houston, with amajor in Psychology. He is currently enrolledin the Medical Informatics program at theUniversity of North Texas School of Libraryand Information Sciences and expects toreceive his Masters in Library Science inDecember 2005. His interest in computers ledhim to take specialized classes in computerhardware-software and networking.Bob’s interests include reading, T’ai ChiChuan, bluegrass, Ham Radio {N5DWJ}, travel and Vajrayana Buddhism.Robert Tatom Robert Tatom started working in the Library asa LAN Systems Specialist on October 4, 2004. Heis a native Houstonian who lived in Minnesotafor few years and recently moved back toHouston.
