The TMC Library will kick off the Medical Ethics Series 2012: Vaccines, Epidemics and Ethics with a lecture and book-signing by Dr. Peter Hotez, author of Forgotten People, Forgotten Diseases: The Neglected Tropical Diseases and Their Impact on Global Health and Development on Tuesday, September 18, 2012 from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. at the TMC Library.   Dr. Hotez, founding Dean of Baylor College of Medicine ‘s new National School for Tropical Medicine, will discuss access to innovations in biotechnology among the poorest people in developing countries and in Texas, and will sign copies of his book.  A light lunch will be provided and attendees will be eligible to enter a drawing at each event to win a Kindle E-Book reader. New Class Offered at the Library Did you know that when you sign a contract to publish an article in a journal, you often sign away your right to give copies to your students and colleagues, and even the right to post a copy in your university’s online repository? And that unless your university's library can afford to subscribe to that journal you may not even be able to access your own published work? There are easy ways to negotiate with your publisher to maintain some of your copyright before signing on the dotted line. This class will show you how. Facts about PMC There are currently 2.4 million articles archived in PMC from:    1,094 full participation journals (complete contents deposited),   233 NIH Portfolio journals (only the required NIH-funded articles deposited), and   1,753 selective-deposit journals (subscription journals depositing a few open-access articles)   A list of journals included in PMC can be found at: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/journals/ PMC was originally launched in February 2000, was developed and is currently managed by NLM’s National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI). PMC Free Access  As an archive, PMC is designed to provide permanent access to all deposited content. Please note that free access does not mean that there is no copyright protection. As described in the PMC copyright page, publishers and individual authors continue to hold copyright on the material in PMC, and users must abide by the terms defined by the copyright holder. How are journal articles provided to PMC? PMC is not a publisher and does not publish journal articles itself. Final versions of articles are contributed to PMC by participating publishers, and PMC is also the designated repository of manuscripts accepted for publication and submitted by authors to PMC in compliance with the Public Access Policy mandated by NIH and other research funding agencies.
