 Library Lines July-September 2009 Vol. XXIII, Number 1 Library Hosts Holocaust Exhibition An Evening with Mr. Walter Kase Donating to the Library From the Interim Executive Director  Local Author Collection Free Library Class Schedule Darwin Celebrations at the Library and that this horrific mo-ment in history should be remembered lest it be re-peated. Mr. Kase now lives in Houston where he spends much of his time speaking to schools, businesses, and organizations about his harrowing experiences.  The Library would like to thank the Holocaust Mu-seum Houston’s Speakers Bureau for helping us to invite Mr. Kase; and for their generous support of our programs, we thank Three Brothers Bakery and Majors Scientific Books .  On August 18, 2009, the Houston Academy of Medi-cine –Texas Medical Center (HAM-TMC) Library was privileged to host a lecture by Mr. Walter Kase, in con-junction with the Deadly Medicine Ex-hibit. Mr. Kase endured forced labor camps and five concen-tration camps, including Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen. When he was freed at age 15, he weighed less than 65 pounds and learned that most of his family had been exterminated.  Mr. Kase’s lecture had a great impact on an audi-ence of 87 attendees, who  listened respectfully to his personal and emotional survival story. The retelling of his experiences in the concentration camps will be remembered for years to come.  Mr. Kase endured this hor-rific ex-perience at an age when most children should be playing sports, going to school or playing games. All these childhood experi-ences were taken away from him by the Nazi re-gime in Germany. His lecture reinforced the idea that there are many things in life that should not be taken for granted An Evening With Mr. Walter Kase Library Hosts Holocaust Exhibition in Washington, D.C. and is part of an ac-claimed exhibition that originally opened there in April, 2004.   The exhibition contains historical photographs and survivor testimony from the Holocaust, in-cluding explicit images of medical experimenta-tion on children.  The HAM-TMC Library is the first library to host this exhibit in the U.S. The exhibit has been previ-ously displayed at dif-ferent museums and galleries across the country. This exhibition is made possible through the support of the following donors from the greater New York area: The David Berg Foundation, The Blanche and Irving Laurie Foundation, The Lester Robbins and Sheila Johnson Robbins Traveling and Tempo-rary Exhibitions Fund, and The Dorot Founda-tion. The HAM-TMC Library hosted the traveling ex-hibition, Deadly Medi-cine: Creating the Mas-ter Race from July 6, through September 23, 2009. This unique ex-hibit was on loan from the United States Holo-caust Memorial Museum Although the cost of providing information resources to the Texas Medical Center community increases each year, the Library and its governing and supporting institutions have all found it necessary to tighten budgets for the foreseeable future. The need for access to excellent educational and clinical information is undiminished. Authors have responded positively with a number of   books received. These donations are important contributions to medical literature and add tremendous value to the HAM-TMC Library’s collections. First, in this difficult economic time, we have found it necessary to make painful cuts to the electronic resources  available in the Library and to qualified remote access users. With costs of these resources increasing from 10 to 20% each year, the Library is not able to continue to subscribe to as many resources. Go to the Library’s website for more information on these cuts. Currently, the Library has on display an important yet disturbing exhibit from the U.S. Holocaust Museum entitled Deadly Medicine: Creating the Master Race. As a Resource Library under contract to the National Network of Libraries of Medicine South Central Region (NN/LM SCR), we continue to conduct outreach activities to the institutional members of the Texas Medical Center, to consumers and to a twenty-one-county sub-region designated by the National Library of Medicine. Finally, in these difficult times, the Library has created two new ways for you to contribute. First, we have begun a new program asking local authors to donate copies of their recently published health sciences-related books to the Library. Since we do not have a budget to purchase books, these donations help supplement the print collection. Additionally, we have added a ―Donate‖ button on our website. I encourage all of you to make a donation to the HAM-TMC Library or to the Friends of the TMC Library. Donation is through PayPal and is a secure process. To view the complete class schedule and to register, check the Library web site:  http://resource.library.tmc.edu/cls/ Darwin Celebrations at the Library  Darwin 2009 Houston was year-long celebration of Darwin’s life, his contribution to science and continuing developments in scientific knowledge.  2009 marked the bicen-tennial anniversary of Charles Darwin’s birth and the 150th anniversary of the publica-tion of On the Origin of Species.   The Library celebrated the bicentennial of the births of Charles Darwin and Abraham Lincoln, both born on February 12, 1809, with classes, a review of Darwin biographies. of Charles Darwin and birthday cake and prizes on Thursday, February 12, 2009. On April 17, Dr. John H. Wilson of Baylor College of Medicine presented a book review of Next by Michael Crichton and led a discussion of the possibilities and ramifications of genetic engineering.  In all six lectures were given at the Houston Museum of Natural Sciences and 12 other Darwin events were held at various locations in Houston.  The Library hosted the National Library of Medicine exhibit Rewriting the Book of Na-ture: Charles Darwin and the Rise of Evolutionary Theory, on display at the Library until January 2010.
