library engaged in collectingand organizing electronicresources and making themaccessible to you. The libraryretains its value as a “place”,but as a place it is evolvingfrom traditional book and jour-nal stacks into an interactive,computer-centered venue forgroup study. Services are flow-ing out from the Library to youvia the Web. Librarians are alsogoing out into the community,delivering consumer and pro-fessional health informationdirectly to people. This infor-mation is increasingly beingmade available in the first lan-guages of our diverse populaceand it is being located in placespeople frequent. These arechoices aimed at improving the life of our community.Our clients’ current infor-mation delivery needs, and ourmission to meet and anticipatethose needs, have directlyimpacted the budget. As aresult, HAM-TMC Library canreadily provide its existing andpotential supporters with a vari-ety of ideas on ways to supportthe Library financially. Raisingfunds to sustain the Library is a serious matter. It is veryimportant to us to match theneeds of this organization withthe desires and requirements ofthe founders and donors.Currently there are manychoices available to support the Library’s infrastructure, itscontinuity and its growth.To meet the changing needsof our users, we will soonembark on some relativelysmall changes aimed at refur-bishing the current library facil-ity. Focus groups of libraryusers and non-users are sched-uled for Spring 2007 in order togather valuable communityinput. Some of the smallchanges to the facility beingconsidered now are necessaryin order to kick off neededmajor changes later. Many of themare made quickly without a great deal of thought. Somechoices take a long time andsome reflect our commitmentto the community we live in. Iam going to talk about a choicethat affects our community’squality of life. Founded in 1949, theHouston Academy of Medicine– Texas Medical Center (HAM-TMC) Library is the anchor spotfor health and medical sciencesinformation in the TexasMedical Center (TMC). ThisLibrary serves over 40 institu-tions, including two medicalschools, three nursing schools,13 renowned hospitals, 18 coun-ties and five states through itsdesignation as Regional MedicalLibrary for the National Networkof Libraries of Medicine SouthCentral Region.When most of us picture aLibrary, we see in our mind’seye, stacks and stacks of shelv-ing filled with bound books andjournals but this vision doesnot reflect today’s library. During Ruth’s50 years in private practice, she delivered more than 3000babies, held appointments atthe major hospitals in Houstonand was a faculty member atthe Baylor College of Medicine.She was active in medical organ-izations, such as the AmericanWomen’s Medical Association,of which she served asPresident and received theElizabeth Blackwell Award.She and her sister, HallieHartgraves, attended theUniversity of Texas – Austin inthe 1920s and were among thefirst women graduates of theUniversity of Texas MedicalBranch at Galveston. Hallie wasan ophthalmologist in Chicagofrom the mid 1930s to the late1940s when she became anEpiscopalian nun.The collection includesinformation about Ruth’s Texasheritage, family history and lifeas a professional woman in themid-20th century. Theexhibit highlights the historyand development of thesethree institutions’ nursing pro-grams at the Texas MedicalCenter. On display are arti-facts and information aboutnursing education in the early20th century. The exhibit alsofeatures nursing textbooksused in the late 19th and of information to its users. TheHAM-TMC Library is fortunateto have been provided anendowment for the John P.McGovern Historical Collectionsand Research Center. Thisendowment is enlarged yearlythrough different opportunitiesfor giving. In 2006-2007, the JohnP. McGovern Foundation issueda $20,000 challenge grant calledthe MatchMaker Fund. Themoney raised will be matcheddollar for dollar up to the $20,000total. Currently letters are arriv-ing in the homes of potentialdonors. Please take the time toconsider making the choice toparticipate in this vital programof support for the future of theHistorical Collections. The enddate for MatchMaker donationsis May 31, 2007.Growth and vitality come to a Library through the acquisitionof documents and electronicmedia for the collections. By thenew millennium, 75 percent ofacademic journals were offeringonline editions, and more than1,000 peer-reviewed journalsexisted only in digital form(1).This past year the Library hasfocused on shifting from print toelectronic collections of booksand journals. Individuals, groupsand other funding entities canfinancially adopt any of our jour-nals, books and databases; thisis one very concrete means ofsupporting the Library andthereby supporting research andpatient care in the TMC. TheLibrary now offers about 8,000electronic journals and willretain fewer than 300 print sub-scriptions for 2007. HAM-TMCLibrary’s electronic collectionhas increased dramatically dur-ing 2005-2006. The move tooffering online-only publicationsrequires a greater outlay offunds for infrastructure, andprices for library resources in allformats are increasing rapidly. Electronic current resourcesand print historical materials willcontinue to exist side by side forthe foreseeable future. Martha’sresponsibilities are to raisemoney to fund HAM-TMCLibrary programs, collectionsand services; to obtain and over-see grants; and to insure that theLibrary’s public relations effortsreach potential funding sources.She will also coordinate thefund-raising activities of theFriends of the Texas MedicalCenter Library.Martha’s previous experienceinclude development activities atthe Lord of the Streets EpiscopalChurch and Community of theStreets Outreach, Corp., theSalvation Army, Texas Division,Justice for Children andNeighborhood Centers, Inc.Martha, a native Houstonian,received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Houston and is a LicensedSocial Worker.Dean Jameshas returned to the library after an absence ofnine years. He isthe Catalog andMetadata Librarian inCollections Management. In hisprevious life at the library, hestarted as  a copy cataloger in1986 and ended as head of thecataloging and serials depart-ments. Dean earned a PhD inmedieval history from RiceUniversity in 1986. Whileworking at the  HAM-TMCLibrary he earned his Master ofScience in Library Science(MSLS) from the University ofNorth Texas in 1992.Karen E. Bülow is the new Health Professionals Outreach Coordinator of theNN/LM SCR office. Karen joins us from the Mae Hilty MemorialLibrary, at the Texas ChiropracticCollege (TCC) in Pasadena, Texas where she was a PublicServices Librarian.Prior to her position at theTCC Library, Karen was anAssistant Branch Manager at theHouston Public Library.
