The Insider Express A monthly e-newsletter of The TMC Library Vol. 9(5) 2011 Insider Express Blog: http://insiderexpress.wordpress.com/  National Library of Medicine Awards Contract to The TMC Library The TMC Library is pleased to announce that it has retained the contract to serve as the Regional Medical Library for the South Central Region for  2011 – 2016 period.   Eight institutions throughout the country serve as RMLs in their respective regions. The RML program, originally authorized by Congress in the 1965 Medical Library Assistance Act, is designed to equalize and enhance access to health sciences information throughout the United States. The goals of the 2011-2016 RML contracts are: to develop collaborations among Network members and other organizations to improve access to and sharing of biomedical information resources throughout the nation; to promote awareness of, access to, and use of biomedical information resources for health professionals and the public, with a particular emphasis on contributing to Healthy People 2020; and to develop, promote, and improve electronic access to health information by Network members, health professionals, and organizations providing health information to the public. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to continue our work, in collaboration with our Network members, to provide health professionals and consumers in the Region with access to quality health information.   In the months ahead, we will be rolling out exciting new classes and funding opportunities. Featuring John “Ace” Passmore, MD., FACC, Magician and Donna Passmore, Attorney and Palm Reader who have performed an award-winning magic act across America and L. Maximilian Buja, MD., Oenophile, Executive Director of the TMC Library. Dr. Buja is an enthusiastic gourmand and oenophile.  A silent auction is currently available for online bids. The TMC Library will be hosting the exhibit The Literature of Prescription: Charlotte Perkins Gilman and The Yellow Wall-Paper, from May 29-July 9, 2011.    In the late 19th century, when women were beginning to challenge traditional ideas about gender that excluded them from political and intellectual life, medical and scientific experts drew on notions of female weakness to justify unequal treatment of women. Gilman, who was discouraged from pursuing a career supposedly to preserve her health, rejected these ideas in a terrifying short story. The famous tale served as an indictment of the medical profession and the social conventions restricting women's professional and creative opportunities. Caring for the Mind: Providing Mental Health Information at Your Library a class taught by Karen Vargas, on June 15, from 9:30 am – 11:30 am. Ms. Vargas is the Consumer Health Coordinator of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, South Central Region. Ms. Vargas is responsible for organizing, promoting and implementing consumer health information programs in Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas.  She teaches a variety of classes on consumer health issues for the general public, librarians and health professionals. The class is free but requires registration.  To register for the class, go to: http://nnlm.gov/training/consumer/caringforthemind/  June 15, 2011: Lecture on Victorian Madness and Women  Join us on June 15, 2011 from 12:00 – 1:00 pm at the Texas Medical Center Library for a lecture on Victorian Madness and Women by Helena Michie, PhD., Agnes Cullen Arnold Professor in Humanities at Rice University.   The author of numerous books, Dr. Michie has published articles on feminist theory and Victorian literature and has been an NEH and Guggenheim fellow. She is the co-editor, with Ronald Thomas, of the essay collection Nineteenth-Century Geographies: The Transformation of Space from the Victorian Age to the American Century (Rutgers UP 2002).  Professor Michie teaches courses in feminist theory, literary theory and Victorian literature and culture. She also holds classes and workshops on professional writing. Nanomedicine (1743-5889) is a uniquely medicine-focused journal, addressing the important challenges and advances in medical nanoscale-structured material and devices, biotechnology devices and molecular machine systems and nanorobotics, delivering this essential information in concise, clear and attractive article formats. The journal is a valuable information source for all players in the field – academic, industrial and clinical researchers, pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, regulatory authorities and others across the scientific community.”  This journal is indexed in MEDLINE/Index Medicus, Chemical Abstracts, Scopus, and a number of other databases and indexes.  Nanomedicine (1743-5889), ranks 9 out of 59 in the category of Nanoscience & Nanotechnology and its 2009 JCR Impact Factor is 5.982. The TMC Library started subscription to this journal in October, 2010.  Science Translational Medicine offers original, peer-reviewed, science-based research that successfully advances clinical medicine toward the goal of improving patients’ lives.  Its mission is “to promote human health by providing a forum for communication and cross-fertilization among basic, translational, and clinical research practitioners and trainees from all relevant established and emerging disciplines.”   The publication schedule runs 12 issues per year with 12-16 original peer-reviewed articles per issue.  Users may tailor the STM site to their own needs and interests by setting up CiteTrack alerts by keyword, author or citation. Features include: a live discussion forum; citations to the latest papers (linking to PubMed); an international listing of institutes and laboratories; separate links for news on drugs, conferences and research; clinics information for the consumer; and more items too numerous to list here. It links to the AlzSWAN Knowledge Base and its tutorials, and to a collection of special seminars as well as online journal club discussions, recorded talks and other presentations that describe a variety of scientific hypotheses about the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease.
