Additionally, DASH  provides information on specific ethnicities and links to other resources related to these issues.   Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS) (http://www.cdc.gov/healthyyouth/yrbs/)  YRBSS is a survey which monitors priority health-risk behaviors and the prevalence of obesity and asthma amongst youth and young adults. Included in YRBSS is a national school-based survey which is conducted by the CDC. Their website provides access to detailed and in-depth national data on health status, education, violence, obesity, and sexual practices amongst Latino population.   DEMOGRAPHICS  Pew Hispanic Center (http://pewhispanic.org/)  Pew Hispanic Center, part of the Pew Research Center, is a research organization which aims to provide factual data about the Hispanic population in the United States. The studies focus on various issues such as demographics, economics, education, identity, immigration, labor, politics, and remittance that are closely associated with the Hispanic population of the United States.  United States Census Bureau (http://www.census.gov/)  The Census Bureau serves as the leading source of quality data about the nation’s people and economy. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention – Cancer Prevention and Control: Health Disparities  (http://www.cdc.gov/cancer/healthdisparities/)  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is a global resource for health information and statistics. CDC's Division of Cancer Prevention and Control (DCPC) collaborates with national, state, and local organizations to identify problems and develop solutions for preventing and reducing occurrences of cancer.  Centers for Disease Control and Prevention – Division of Oral Health (http://www.cdc.gov/oralhealth/index.htm)  The Centers of Disease Control and Prevention’s Division of Oral Health (DOH) has joined the initiative of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to expand oral health services, education, and research in the United States. DOH provides information on latest research regarding oral health. Their website provides a wealth of information on oral health initiatives and their results. HEALTH – LATINO   Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) – Office of Minority Health and Health Disparities (http://www.cdc.gov/omhd/)  The Office of Minority Health and Health Disparities (OMHD), a division of the CDC, provides reports regarding the health status of vulnerable populations in the United States, including Latinos.  OMHD’s goal is to eliminate the health disparities within the minority population groups that are identified as at-risk. U.S. Department of Health and Human Services – Office of Minority Health (http://minorityhealth.hhs.gov/)  The Office of Minority Health, established in 1986, provides vital and detailed information to the Secretary and the Office of Public Health and Science. OMH collects and disseminates information on public health programs affecting minorities in the United States. OMH provides data and statistics on demographics, disease, and other health-related topics by race/ethnicity. OMH’s website also offers information on funding, cultural competency, and other topics related specifically to minority populations.   OBESITY  Surgeon General’s Call to Action to Prevent and Decrease Overweight and Obesity  (http://www.surgeongeneral.gov/topics/obesity/calltoaction/)  In this Surgeon General’s report, obesity is reported as an epidemic in the United States. The report indicates the epidemic has impacted certain ethnic groups more than others. It takes a comprehensive look at the causes, conditions, results, and solutions to the problem of obesity in the United States.  Latino Coalition for a Healthy California (http://www.lchc.org/) Latino Coalition for  a Healthy California  has been a leading voice in promoting Latino health through advocacy efforts, community involvement, and policy development. CMMHR also conducts and makes available data from the National Latino and Asian American Study (NLAAS), a comprehensive study which overviews the differences and similarities in mental illnesses and services used in Latinos and Asian Americans. PUBLIC POLICY  Center for Latino Policy Research (http://clpr.berkeley.edu/)  The Center for Latino Policy Research at UC Berkley sponsors research projects that have the potential to have a direct policy impact on Latino populations in the U.S. The center’s research focuses primarily on education, migration, and political/civic participation. The Center for Latino Policy Research has played an important role in studying demographic changes and existing inequalities in California, and provides access to case-studies, seminar information, and publications related to immigration, labor, education, and civic engagement issues of the Latino population. Its research and advocacy programs are focused on the well-being of the whole child. The Institute also makes its research findings available to various entities such as government organizations, academic institutions, community leaders, and private sector executives.   The Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation (http://www.kff.org/)  The Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation is a comprehensive resource for health information.  A leader in health policy and communications, the Kaiser Family Foundation is a non-profit, private operating foundation focusing on the major health care issues facing the U.S. The foundation provides access to valuable information regarding a wide array of health issues. In addition, it provides reliable data regarding health status, health policy issues, and demographic health information with studies and research information.   Latino Issue Forum (http://www.lif.org/)  Latino Issue Forum (LIF) focuses on improving the quality of life for Latinos through policy and advocacy.   Their focus is primarily on policy analysis related to issues such as early childhood education, housing issues, equity and accessibility, and immigration reform.  Their website provides information on social, economic, and political issues related specifically to immigrants.   Latino Intersections Resource Center at Dartmouth College (http://journals.dartmouth.edu/latinox/resource_center/)  The Resource Center provides comprehensive listings of resources on Latino issues and organizations, including:  a Latino Directory, Teaching Tools, Latino Media and Books, Politics and Latino Policy, and Professional Development. Working together with local law enforcement, the FBI has assisted with arrests and raids on many major human trafficking rings. Polaris Project http://www.polarisproject.org/ The Polaris Project, a national organization located in Washington D.C., is one of the largest organizations working to combat national and international human trafficking.  The organization runs the National Human Trafficking Hotline and has conducted extensive victim outreach programs.   Additionally, Polaris Project’s website lists many human trafficking resources, including training and technical assistance programs, as well as national statistics on pending legislation.    The State of Human Trafficking in Texas  http://childrenatrisk.org/research/child-trafficking  The Center to End the Trafficking and Exploitation of Children (CETEC) at CHILDREN AT RISK produced The State of Human Trafficking in Texas, a comprehensive report that includes an overview of human trafficking in Texas; anti-trafficking policy on a global, national, and statewide scale; the fight against human trafficking; and several case studies, both domestic and international.      1: Related ResourcesPublished by DigitalCommons@The Texas Medical Center, 2011Federal Response  Department of Health and Human Services http://www.acf.hhs.gov/trafficking/ The Department of Health and Human Services initiated the Rescue and Restore Victims of Human Trafficking campaign in order to identify and assist victims of human trafficking in the U.S.  The campaign has increased the number of identified victims.  It has also helped to provide these victims the benefits and care they need to live safely within the U.S., as well as the rehabilitation they need to live independently.  The Rescue and Restore Campaign has established Rescue and Restore coalitions in 24 cities, regions, and states.    Department of Homeland Security – Blue Campaign http://www.dhs.gov/files/programs/humantrafficking.shtm The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is a component of the Department of Homeland Security and works to help dismantle the global infrastructure of human trafficking through their Blue Campaign. The Blue Campaign has endeavored to inform people nationwide of the prevalent nature of trafficking through billboard campaigns, public service announcements, and cards they distribute at the airport in multiple languages.  The use of different languages has proven to be of great benefit to the campaign.    U.S. Department of State – Trafficking in Person’s Report 2010 http://www.state.gov/g/tip/rls/tiprpt/2010/ For the first time, this report included the United States on its list of countries in outlining the challenges posed by trafficking around the globe.  This report holds the United States to the same standards to which other countries are held.  The report additionally is broken down into many different chapters that highlight victims’ stories, policy priorities, country narratives, and the prevention and termination of human trafficking.    U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement  http://www.ice.gov/predator/ Operation Predator was initiated by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to safeguard children and arrest people who are exploiting and trafficking children. This is a great resource for people who want to get involved with their local coalition.    National Human Trafficking Resource Center – Polaris Project http://nhtrc.polarisproject.org/ The Polaris Project is in charge of the National Human Trafficking Hotline that is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, every day of the year.  This hotline is available to report a tip, to connect with anti-trafficking services in your area, and to request training and technical assistance.  The hotline has been operated by the Polaris Project since 2007 and receives around 1,000 phone calls per month.    Office for Victims of Crime http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/ovc/grants/index.html There is federal funding available for domestic minor trafficking victims, both male and female, and for all forms of trafficking including both sex and labor.  OVC issued funding to three organizations to launch comprehensive program services for domestic minor trafficking victims.  The three programs that were funded are located in Chicago, San Francisco and New York.  These grants are three-year pilot programs that include funding for housing.    Salvation Army http://www.salvationarmyusa.org/trafficking  Salvation Army USA’s anti-trafficking efforts focus on four core areas: legislative and policy initiatives, awareness-raising and training (Anti-Trafficking Training Manual, Initiative Against Sexual Trafficking, Faith Alliance Against Slavery and Trafficking), prevention efforts, and development and provision of trafficking survivor services. The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy http://www.thenationalcampaign.org/   The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy provides national and state data regarding teen and unplanned pregnancy, tracks trends in the prevalence of teen and unplanned pregnancy, documents consequences related to these outcomes, describes the populations at risk, and summarizes promising approaches for prevention with a focus on science-based approaches.
