TheAssociation also offers on-goingsupport and advice to members andtheir families and provides dietaryguidelines, thus improving the qualityof life for the coeliac.Get-togethers are held regularly togive members the opportunity to meetand also to discuss any problems theymight have. For these activitiesmembers are encouraged to bakeCoelicAssociation Maltagluten-free products which are sharedover coffee. This is also an occasion toexchange recipes. Speakers aresometimes invited to give talks tomembers on various issues includingmedical, dietetic and nutritionalconcerns. Every year two delegatesfrom the Coeliac Association of Maltaattend the annual AOECS conference,thus acquiring important informationon recent developments. This yearlyevent is also an excellent opportunityto meet delegates from other countriesand discuss matters of commonconcern.Yearly contacts with localmanufacturers are kept in order toinvestigate the presence of gluten intheir products. A list of locallymanufactured products certified to begluten-free is then issued anddistributed to all members.One aspect where it is difficult forthe Association to advise membersconcerns medicines. Some medicinesmay contain hidden sources of glutenand it is proving to be rather difficultfor the Coeliac patient to know whethera specific medicine contains gluten. Theprevalence of diagnosed coeliacs inother countries varies considerably,however it is now anticipated that truefigures may in actual fact be muchhigher in every country, with manypatients remaining undiagnosed.The number of members of theAssociation at present is 200.
