Information and communication technologies allow a continuous enrichment of the circle of creation, storing and access to knowledge. However, this very possibility is dimmed by commercial and corporate interests, as well as by the divide between countries and social sectors. This article describes actual gaps in the access to information, obstacles in current scholarly communication models, paradoxes in copyright legislation in the digital environment, and issues related to digital preservation.
