In the last years, the Polish information community has seen an emergence of many new social, government and institutional initiatives expressing a need for a national digital collection. The author describes the new initiatives, discusses positive and negative aspects of the current situation and calls for cooperation among all parties interested in the development of a national digital project. She stresses that the key issue in building a Polish digital collection is that it must be conducted by library and information professionals in a well-organized, integrated and responsible manner
