This paper discusses the challenges of scientific and technical information control and organization in relation to current proposals of scholarly communication, presenting eprints repositories as one of the business models. The project Arena Científica from Portcom is presented as a specific example of the communication studies area for countries of Portuguese language. This project aims to promote the dissemination and preservation of scholarly production and, specially, engage researchers of this area into international movement of open access to scholarly information
