Abstract
The aim of this research was to examine the effectivity of carrot extract as an alternative extender
of Bali bull epididymal spermatozoa stored at 3–5 o C. Six testis with epididymi of Bali bulls were obtained
from slaughterhouse. Spermatozoa from six epididymi were collected by the combination of slicing, flushing
and tissues pressure of cauda epididymi with physiological saline. Collected-spermatozoa was diluted by tris
extender containing 20% egg yolk (control), 80% carrot extract + 20% egg yolk (CE20), 70% carrot extract
+ 30% egg yolk (CE30), and 60% carrot extract + 40% egg yolk (CE40), respectively. Diluted-spermatozoa
was stored in refrigerator at 3–5 o C. Quality of diluted-spermatozoa including the percentages of spermatozoa
motility and live were evaluated everyday during storage at 3–5 o C for five days. Data were analyzed using
completely randomized design with four treatments and six replications. Results of this study showed that
viability of epididymal spermatozoa could be maintained better in Tris extender rather than in carrot extract
extender. At day-6 of storage, the percentages of spermatozoa motility and live of control (40.83 and
59.16%) were significantly (P<0.05) higher than those of CE20 (27.5 and 49%), CE30 (30.83 and 49.5%),
and CE40 (27.5 and 47.83%). At day-4 storage, percentage of spermatozoa motility of CE30 (45%) was
significantly (P<0.05) higher than that of CE20 (40%) and CE40 (40%). In conclusion, carrot extract-egg
yolk was effective to use as an alternative extender of Bali bull epididymal spermatozoa stored at 3–5 o C.
