The mean age ofinitiating smoking has been found to bearound 20 years;[2] ⁠ the common reasons forchildren to smoke include peer pressure,parents that smoke, a tendency to self-harm,and viewing cigarettes as a way of rebellionand asserting independence.[3] ⁠ Smoking isbecoming increasingly popular among Indianchildren, some as young as sixth-graders.[4] ⁠Various legislations have been passed in Indiato curb the use of tobacco- containingproducts. Cigarettes (Regulation ofProduction, Supply and Distribution) Act,1975 mandates that advisory warnings bedepicted on all products containingtobacco.[5] ⁠  The Supreme Court of Indiapassed a judgment on 2nd November 2001recognizing the adverse effects of smokingand banning smoking in public places.[6] ⁠  TheCigarettes and Other Tobacco Products(Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulationof Trade and Commerce, Production, Supplyand Distribution) Act, 2003, further reinforcedthe legislation and prohibited advertisementof smoking, and banned sale of tobaccoproducts to children under 18 years of age orwithin 100 yards of educational institutions.Do these legislations work? Has theprevalence of smoking in India come down?Have people become aware of the harmfuleffects of smoking?
