Information about this program was already provided in the editorial by Kleinet al. (2014) prefacing the nine papers published in the first special issue on a variety of topics investigated withinMetStröm earlier this year. In this issue, a second set of six papers is presented with four of them focusingon research activities around the benchmark experiments in the “Rotating Annulus”, which were performed atthe Brandenburg Technical University at Cottbus. These are the contributions by Borchert et al. (2014): Finitevolume models with implicit subgrid-scale parameterisations for the heated rotating annulus, by Hoff et al. (2014):Empirical singular vectors of baroclinic flows deduced from experimental data of a differentially heated rotatingannulus, by von Larcher and Dörnbrack (2014): Numerical simulations of baroclinic driven flows in a thermallydriven annulus using the immersed boundary method and by Vincze et al. (2014): Benchmark in a rotating annulus:a comparative experimental and numerical study of baroclinic wave dynamics. The paper by Queck et al. (2014):TurbEFA: an interdisciplinary effort to investigate the turbulent flow across a forest clearing is related to thefield experiment on turbulence within a forest canopy. Finally, the article by Dietze et al. (2014): Controllingentrainment in the smoke cloud using level set-based front tracking is concerned with the subtopic “Two-PhaseFlows/Convection”, which is one of the three sub-topics in MetStröm as mentioned in Klein et al. (2014). The lastpapers of this MetStröm series will appear as part of the next regular issue of Meteorologische Zeitschrift and willcontain topics on semi-convection, turbulence effects in clouds, tropical cyclones and subgrid scale modelling.ReferencesBorchert, S., U. Its short name “MetStröm” combines the German words“Meteorologie” and “Strömungsmechanik”, i.e., meteorology and fluid mechanics. The program was initiated byRupert Klein, Free University Berlin and Dieter Etling, Leibniz University Hannover.Within MetStröm, researchers from Meteorology, (engineering) Fluid Dynamics and Applied Mathematicscooperated in multidisciplinary projects to lay the foundations for model- as well as grid-adaptive numericalsimulation concepts. Specifically, the goal was to initiate the development of simulation models which wouldcombine scale-dependent (mathematical) descriptions of key physical processes with adaptive flow discretizationschemes.Deterministic approaches based on continuum mechanics, discrete and/or stochastic closures for unresolvedscales, and their respective interplay with numerical discretization schemes were investigated to contribute to anadvanced methodology of multiscale meteorological/fluid mechanics modelling.Over the total funding period of six years, 21 projects operated by 65 principal investigators were funded andgrouped into three major research areas,• Large Scale Dynamics and Models• Turbulence/Large Eddy Simulations (LES)• Multiphase Flows (clouds and convection)While the majority of the projects addressed theoretical issues and numerical simulation techniques, threejudiciously chosen laboratory experiments and one field observation campaign provided benchmark data for modelvalidation purposes. These were rotating annulus experiments at the Brandenburg University of Technology atCottbus, related to the research area “Large Scale Dynamics”, boundary layer wind tunnel experiments at HamburgUniversity and turbulence field measurements over a forest canopy by Technical University of Dresden, both relatedto “Turbulence/LES”, and droplet interaction wind tunnel experiments at the University of Magdeburg, related to“Multiphase Flows”.The MetStröm program was funded by the DFG for 6 years in total and ended formally in June 2013. The proposal met with very positive response andthe present one is the first of these two dedicated issues. These issues cover 19 contributions, specifically includingresults from several co-operations between the individual projects, as reflected by the respective lists of authors.The present issue, Part I, focuses on multiphase flows, encompassing the papers by Braack et al.: Errorestimation and adaptive chemical transport modeling, Hoffmann et al.: Entrainment and mixing at the interfaceof shallow cumulus clouds. Results from a combination of observations and simulations, Jasor et al.: Modellingartefacts in the simulation of sedimentation with a quadrature method of moments, Schmeyer et al.: Numericalsimulations of measurements of a droplet size distribution in a turbulent vortex, Siewert et al.: Influence ofturbulence on the drop growth in warm clouds. Part I: Comparison of numerically determined collision kernelsand Ziemer et al.: Quantitative comparison of presumed-number-density and quadrature moment methods for dropsedimentation.The article by Liersch et al.: Recent progress in designing moving meshes for complex flows can be relatedto the sub topic Turbulence/LES.
