XVII Conference of Italian Labour Economics Association 26-27 September 2002 - Salerno, Italy Call for papers The 
Conference consists of two thematic sessions and one session including free contributions. The two thematic sessions 
will be introduced by invited lecturers, followed by the presentation of selected papers. The Conference will be held in 
Italian and English. THEMATIC SESSIONS Regions, Europe and the labour market. Recent problems and 
developments Session Co-ordinators: Floro Ernesto Caroleo and Sergio Destefanis The increasing attention for 
processes of hysteresis, endogenous growth and, more generally, the so-called "new economic geography" has recently 
brought to the fore the regional dimension of economic issues. Attention is also warranted by persistent differences in 
incomes per capita and in activity rates across European (and Italian) regions. Moreover, the creation of a single 
currency area hinders the power of each country to use fiscal and monetary policy to beat regional unemployment. All 
this happens, while the Eastward enlargement of the EU widens considerably the scope of regional cohesion. 
Somehow, one could say that most of the EU''s economic and labour market issues are becoming regional issues. 
These recent events relating to the interaction between the European economy and its regions prompt research aimed 
at answering various underlying questions. For further details visit the AIEL web page. Strategic interaction between 
unions and public institutions Co-ordinator: Nicola Acocella The session intends to deal with strategic interaction 
among institutions featuring in the labour market and other collective agents, in particular public institutions such as the 
Government and the Central bank. More specifically, the purpose is to examine how macroeconomic performance in 
terms of employment and inflation is influenced by the existence of unions, the nature of their preference function, 
their co-operative attitudes vis-à-vis public institutions, the partisan nature of their preferences, the degree of 
centralisation of bargaining. Free contributions This session comprises papers on labour economics, not included in the 
two thematic sessions. PROCEDURES AND DEADLINES Authors are invited to send unpublished papers. Abstracts 
(.doc file) and/or preliminary versions of the papers (doc or .pdf file) must be sent not later than 30/04/2002 to AIEL 
secretary, via e-mail, to the address aiel@aiel.it . Articles ((doc or .pdf file)) must be sent within 15/6/2002 via e-mail 
to the address aiel@aiel.it. Session organisers will accept or reject papers before 15/07/2002. Final version in electronic 
copy (pdf. file) of accepted articles, to be ed in AIEL WEB page, must be sent not later than 10/09/2002 to AIEL 
secretary to the address aiel@aiel.it
