Historical Memory of Ethnic Groups in Rituals——An Analysis on the Ceremony of Repaying the Panwang of Hezhou Yaos in Guangxi

Abstract

Th e "Historical Memory" of ethnic narratives is the core issue of ethnography in ethnic study, and the historical "container"- ritual is not only the "genesis form" for the narrative, expression, and spreading of an ethnic group, it is also an effective sample containing historical memory, ethnic identity, and strategy selection for itself.By taking the Yaos' Panhu myth and Ceremony of Repaying the Panwang as examples, and based on the ritual theory of anthropology, this article makes an analysis on the Yaos' historical issues such as ethnic identity, mythological narratives of heroic ancestors, ritual styles and so on.It tries to prove that the social and historical memory, as a strategic choice of the ethnic group, bears a direct relation to the ethnic identity and survival relation in special situations.
