More than 170 participants from different Europeancountries and around the globe attended the conference. Themeeting was divided into six sessions of lectures, including oralposter presentations and two poster sessions with close to 100posters. The symposium was opened with a plenary lecture bySir Michael Berridge (Cambridge, UK), who gave a splendid in-depth view on calcium signaling in health and disease.The meeting spanned a wide range of calcium-signalingprocesses starting from the evolution of calcium functions andcalcium-binding proteins and included structural aspects ofcalcium-binding proteins, the influence of calcium signaling ongene expression and cellular trafficking, pathophysiologicalaspects and a session on systems biology. One highlight of themeeting was the session devoted to calcium channels because ofthe exciting new findings of how the depletion of intracellularcalcium stores is sensed by the newly discovered protein STIMand mediated to the store-operated influx calcium channels suchas ORAI, a long sought member of the ICRAC or store-operated(SOC) Ca2+ channels. A number of lecturers presentedstructural aspects of Ca2+-binding proteins, as well as theirinteractions with targets, and emphasized how malfunction ofcalcium regulation could result in various diseases. Somelectures paved the way for proteins involved in calciumsignaling to be new and interesting therapeutic targets. Thelarge number of young researchers attending the meeting notonly underlined the attraction of studying various aspects ofcalcium biology but also contributed to lively discussionsthroughout the meeting. The high quality of the many posters0167-4889/$ - see front matter © 2006 Published by Elsevier B.V.doi:10.1016/j.bbamcr.2006.10.014presented at the meeting is documented by the two poster prizesrecommended by two committees that had the difficult task ofselecting one poster from each of the two sessions.
