Glyphosate (N-[phosphonomethyl] glyeine) is a high1y effeetive, non-seleetive herbieide. Herbieide-resistant erop (HRC) has been the most sueeessful trait used in transgenie erops throughout the world. Transgenie glyphosate-resistant erops (GRCs) have been eommereialized and grown extensiveIy in the Westem Hemisphere and, to a lesser extent, elsewhere. GRCs have genera11y beeome dominant in those eountries where they have been approved for use, greatly inereasing the utilization of glyphosate. Potential effeets of glyphosate on ground and surfaee water are lower than the effeets of the most herbieides that are replaeed when GRCs are adopted. Perhaps the most positive indireet effeet is that GRCs erops promote the adoption of redueed- or no-tillage agrieulture, resulting in a signifieant reduetion in soil erosion and water eontamination. Glyphosate and its degradation produet, aminomethylphosphonate (AMPA), residues are not usual1y deteeted in high leveIs in ground or surfaee water in areas where glyphosate is used extensively. There are some eoneems about AMP A in water sinee it has higher mobility and persistenee in the environrnent than glyphosate. However, neither glyphosate nor AMP A are eonsidered to be signifieantly toxie. Of greater eoneem are the formulation ingredients, whieh ean vary from eountry to eountry, from produet to produet, and even over time with the same produet. There is some published evidenee that formulation ingredients might adversely a:ffeet amphibians in some situations.
