124/212Ping Hou1, Hongtao Wang2, Yi Yang11IKE Envionmental Technology Co.,Ltd, China, People's Republic of; 2College of Architecture andEnvironment, Sichuan University, ChinaAs LCA studies have been growing in both quantity and complexity, LCA practitioners need more anddetailed background datasets for their LCA modeling. On LCA mailing list, there are inquiries for variousproducts’ LCA data from across the world every day. Besides, from the perspective of improving dataquality, the datasets should be more specific, representative, and up­to­date. However, datasets ofdatabases stored in LCA software are usually not updated on a regular basis, let alone incorporatingresults of the latest LCA studies. Also, the description of the datasets is not clear for users to read anddocument. In addition, the datasets lack transparent scrutiny due to a large amount of information andintellectual property protection.When we developed the Core Life Cycle Database of China (CLCD­China), we defined CLCD dataformat to describe the datasets, in which information such as boundary and technology type can be chosenfrom a predefined list instead of described in lengthy, ambiguous text. CLCD data format was applied inthe LCA software eBalance we developed. We also developed an online platform, eFootprint, to share andreview datasets. The LCA model built in eBalance, including raw data, mathematical relations andreferences, can be uploaded to eFootprint. LCA practitioners using eFootprint can send out invitationsthrough the online platform to ask a third­party institute to review the data and complete data reviewreport. In eFootprint, intellectual property right can be protected by limiting the accessibility of the datasetor setting up a period of validity. In addition, document of LCA studies can be released on eFootprint andbecome searchable for potential users. The results of LCA studies can be accessed with permission fromthe author. By this way, all LCA practitioiners can build and release their own online database.CLCD data format is a specific data format that can facilitate documentation and datasets selection.eFootprint provides a platform for LCA practitioners to share and communicate LCA studies. We expect anew way of LCA study and database development at internet age.Adapting of Life Cycle Inventories of agricultural products to regional contexts: the caseof Brazilian soybeansClaudia Von Frihauf1, Gil Anderi da Silva1, Marilia Ieda da S. Folegatti Matsuura21University of São Paulo ­ USP, Brazil; 2Embrapa Environment, BrazilEven with a lower growth rate, the world population will increase and with it the need for food. Soy is veryimportant in this context because it is raw material for many industrial products and feed. Brazil, as theworld's largest soybean exporter and the second largest producer, has a responsibility to understand andact on reducing the environmental impacts of the activity. Many researchers take databases to theirinventories that were based in the European context when making a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) forproducts using Brazilian soybeans, because there is no Brazilian database.One of the big differences between the soybean production in Brazil, with European producing countries, isthe size of the properties. In Brazil, according to the latest agricultural census, 43% of farms are largerthan 1,000 hectares (ha). A consequence of the vast expansion of agricultural areas is the requirement oflarge equipment usage, more Effective Field Capacity (EFC), namely, able to cover more acres per hour.In the European context, the equipment is smaller, with EFC and diesel consumption different than Brazil.When agricultural operations of European databases are inserted in Brazilian agricultural processesinventories, diesel consumption and emissions from its combustion are erroneously estimated. In order toevaluate whether these differences are relevant, this study assesses the impact caused by agriculturaloperations considering two scenarios for one Brazilian farm: 1 ­ using data on equipment available inEcoinvent® database for Brazilian soybeans; and 2 ­ considering primary data from a case study. Fromthe analysis of these scenarios, it was confirmed the need to generate agricultural processes inventoriesrelevant to the conditions of the study area (Brazil), preferably gathered in a national database and alsoavailable in international databases. 4:00pm ­ 5:30pmD­VII: Quantifying and Communicating Avoided Emissions: Panel and Discussion onStandardization EffortsSession Chair: Stephen Russel, WRI, United States of AmericaSession Chair: William P Flanagan, General Electric, United States of AmericaAt LCM 2013 in a well­attended session on the management of green product portfolios,there was discussion andagreement that a standard could provide the needed consistency to credibly market innovative products through theiravoided impacts. In a survey released by GHG Protocol last year on this topic, 79 % (of 375 respondents) felt thatthere... Room E  Assessment of Avoided Emissions of ICT Solutions and OrganizationHiroko Ioka, Seiya Yamazaki, Takafumi HashitaniFujitsu Ltd., JapanThrough the provision of ICT (information and communication technology), Fujitsu, a multinational ICTcompany, is working to create values in wide­ranging areas of society, including improvement of efficiencyin energy usage, greater efficiency in production activities, and reduction of the travel of people andtransportation of goods. Indeed, ITU­T, a global telecommunication standardization body points that ICTsector distinguishes itself by its double­edged nature. On the one hand, ICT have an environmental impactat each stage of its life cycle. On the other hand, ICT can enable vast efficiency in lifestyle and in all sectorsof the economy by the provision of ICT solutions.Fujitsu developed the methodology to quantify such environmental positive impacts of ICT solutions in 2004to achieve internal and external understanding of ICT’s impacts on GHG emission reductions in othersectors. This method quantifies the amount of avoided emissions of a ICT solution by comparison of totalemissions from two target systems – baseline system before the ICT solution is applied and the systemwhere the ICT solution is applied. The assessment focuses on the use phase in life cycle of the solution.More details of the methodology and examples of assessment will be shared in the presentation based onexperiences of assessment of more than 300 ICT solutions sold in markets. These know­how and
