Amongtephritids, it is the most harmful toagriculture, particularly because it is themost cosmopolitan and invasive species inits family (Malavasi 2009).Ceratitis capilala was detected forthe first time in Brazil in 1901, infestingoranges in the state of São Paulo (lhering,1901). It is one of the first recordedintroduced pests in Brazil, which adapteditself to the subtropical local conditions andspread rapidly across several states (Zucchi,2001). The species is currently found in 22Brazilian states, with no record in only fivestates in the North and Northeast regions ofthe country (Silva el a!., 2011). It uses awide range of host plants and its larvae candevelop on 374 plant species across 69families (Liquido ef al., 1998). ln Brazil, themost recent compilation lists 58 host species(Zucchi, 2001), with preference forRutaceae, Rubiaceae, Rosaceae andCombretaceae (Malavasi, 2009).Pereskia andeata Mill., commonlyknown as ora-pro-nobis, lemon vine 01'Barbados goosebelTY, is a semi-woodyscrambling cactus of moderate growth rate,with long spiny stems. Its leaves areelliptical, flat, fleshy and dark green; thefruits are spherical (1-3 em diameter) andyellowish when mature (León, 1968;Alzugaray & Alzugaray, 1988; Lorenzi &Souza, 1995). lt produces abundantmucilage, which is applied topically as anemollient in folk medicine. lts leaves arealso edible, used in the preparation of atypical dish in the Brazilian state of MinasGerais (Cruz 1995, Souza & Lorenzi 2005).Pereskia aculeafa is native to Brazil and isdistributed across the Northeast, Center-West, Southeast, and South regIOns of thecountry (Zappi el a!., 2010).ln the municipality of Ponte Nova(20°24'39" S; 42°55'15" W; 456 m), state ofMinas Gerais, two samples of ora-pro-nobisfruits were collected (one directly from theplant and another from fruits recently fallento the ground). The fruits were counted,weighed and stored in screen-top jarscontaining vermiculite and kept at roomtemperature. The material was examinedevery three days. Any found puparia wereremoved and transferred to transparentplastic flasks containing a thin layer ofmoistened vermiculite. The fruit flies andparasitoids that emerged were stored in glassflasks containing 70% ethanol, forsubsequent identification.The infestation rates were 84.00puparia/kg of fruits sampled from the groundand 102.84 puparia/kg of fruits collecteddirectly from the plant (Table 1). Specimensof C. capitala, Anastrepha barbiellinii Lima,Neosilba sp. and Doryclobracon areolalus(Szépligeti) were obtained (Table 1). This isthe first report of natural infestation of P.aculeala by C. capitala in Brazil. A previouswork reports a forced infestation of P.aculeala fruits by C. capilala after the fruitswere placed in cages and exposed to theflies. ln that study, approximately 150 larvaewere found in five fruits (Keck & Marshall,193O apud Liquido el a!., 1991).During this study, we obtained 62females of A. barbiellinii from fruitscollected on the plant, nine from fruitscollected on the ground, and a total of 95males of the species (Table 1). Anaslrephabarbiellinii had already been observed on P.aculeata collected in the municipality ofArceburgo, Minas Gerais, as proven in themolecular studies by Smith-Caldas el a!.,(2001). Later on, Garcia (2006) alsoobserved A. barbiellinii in fruits of P.aculeala, this time in the state of SantaCatarina. However, the first record of A.barbiellinii in a not-identified species ofPel'eskia ("goiapá fruits") was fromspecimens collected in Anhembi, São Paulo(Zucchi, 1983). Anastrepha barbiellinii alsooccurs in the states of Espírito Santo, Rio deJaneiro, Paraná and Rio Grande do Sul(Zucchi, 2008).We also reared two females ofNeos'ilba sp. (Lonchaeidae) in P, aeuleata,but identification at the species leveI was notpossible because the taxonomy of Neosilbais based on male characters. In Brazil,Neosilba larvae have been reported inPilosoeereus arrabidae (Lem.) Byles &G.D. Rowley (Cactaceae), in a restingaecosystem in the state of Rio de Janeiro(Rosa et aI., 1994). This is the first record ofNeosilba associated with fruits of P.aculeata.The parasitoid Doryetobraeonareolatus was detected in both samples(fram plant and ground), but it was notpossible to associate this parasitoid with anyfly species collected.The natural infestation of fruits of P.aculeata by C. eapitata requires furtherstudy to enable a better understanding of therale played by this plant species as analternative host for the Mediterranean fruitfly.ALZUGARA Y, D.; ALZUGARA Y, K.1988.
