MINERALOGICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF MATERIAL TO THEUNDERLYING SOIL AREA ITABORAÍ­RJ, AIMING ATENVIRONMENTAL RECOVERY1Edla Maria Bezerra Lima1 Sylvia Maria Couto Dos Anjos; *sebastião.calderano@embrapa.brClay minerals, kaolinite and smectiteThe work seeks to define the potential mineralogical material underlying the soil of an area inthe municipality of Itaboraí, State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to the environmental rehabilitationof  a  degraded  area.  The  study  was  carried  out  at  Embrapa  Solos  in  partnership  with  otherresearch  institutions  ­  the  Department  of  Mineral  Resources,  DRM­RJ,  UFF,  UERJ  andResearch  Center  of  Petrobras  ­  CENPES.  The  sediments  underlying  soils  currently  arise  atdifferent  levels  due  to  anthropogenic  processes  such  as  urbanization  and mining  extractionactivity clays, correlating Pre­Macacu Formations of Tertiary age and Macacu second DRM­RJ, 1981, in Embrapa, 1979. The mineralogical study of this profile was divided into twelvelevels and indicated the presence of material with high cation exchange capacity  to providethe necessary  elements  for  the development of  plant  forms  adapted  to  the new environmentdegraded.  Part  of  this  knowledge was  obtained  through macroscopic  analysis  and  technicalanalysis  for  the  sand  grains,  the  x­ray  diffraction  and  scanning  electron microscopy  for  theclays and chemistry to levels more clay. The mineralogical composition of the fractions showsgreat  predominance  of  sandy mineral  quartz  followed  by micas  and  /  or  feldspar.  The  clayfraction consists predominantly of kaolinite followed by illite, with the exception of level 12,where it also occurs interstratified vermiculite­smectite­rich smectite. The samples studied bythe  methods  proposed,  presented  themselves  formed,  the  clay  fraction  predominantly  ofkaolinite. At levels 5 to 9 are indications of interstratified mineral type and levels 2:1 10:11 inthe presence of  illite process degradação.O  level 12 differs  completely  from  the  sequence  ispresented  as  consisting  of  kaolinite  with  early  hydration,  and  illite­smectite  interstratifiedvermiculite­rich smectite. Fractions sands constitute a quartz nodules / ferruginous concretions,muscovite, sericite and trace rutile / ilmenite, graphite, tourmaline, magnetite, epidote, zirconand anatase. The most significant variations occur  in  the  levels 7, 9 and 10/11 by  increasedpresence of mica (muscovite and sericite), respectively 8%, 8% and 16%, with the presence ofmodified  feldspar  (3%)  and  the  level  by  12  presence  of  25%  slightly  altered  feldspar(microcline,  orthoclase  and  plagioclase)  relative  to  previous  levels,  and  traces  of  biotitealtered. Texturally, levels 3 and 4 were classified as sandy­clay, as levels 5 and 6 in sandy clayloam, level 7 in sandy loam, 9 and 10 in clay, very clayey and 11 in level 12 in sandy clayloam. The chemical study, Table 2 showed a higher concentration of Ca + +, Mg + +, K + andNa  +  levels  11  and  12,  this  fact  possibly  due  to  the  presence  of  illite  and  interstratifiedvermiculite,  smectite­rich  smectites.  The  higher  content  of  Al2O3  is  related  to  a  higherconcentration of kaolinite and mica scraps and / or feldspar 10:11 levels compared to levels 5and  12.  Therefore,  the  study  showed  the  levels  being  11:12  the  most  useful  providers  ofexchangeable cations a renewal.REFERENCESBrindley, G. W. & Brown, G. Crystal structure of clay minerals and their x­ray identification,3rd Ed., London, Mineralogical society, 1980. 305p.Cantarino, S. da C. Mineração de argila na região de Itaboraí RJ, uma abordagem geológico­ambiental, tese de mestrado, Rio de Janeiro, UFRJ, Instituto de Geociências, 1993. 84p.EMBRAPA./Serviço Nacional de Levantamento e Conservação de Solos. Manual de métodosde análise de solos. Rio de Janeiro, 1979. 1V.EMBRAPA./Centro  Nacional  de  Pesquisa  de  Solos  Procedimentos  normativos  delevantamentos pedológicos. Brasília, 1995. 116 p.Mehra, O. P. & Jackson, M. L. Iron oxide removal from soils and clays by dithionite­citrateasystem buffered with  sodium bicarbonate.  in: NATIONAL CONFERENCE ON CLAYS ANDCLAY MINERALS, 7., Washington D.C., 1958,  edited by Ada Swineford. Proceedings. NewYork, Pergamom Press, 1960. p. 317­327.Thorez, J. Practical identification of clay minerals, Editors G. Lelotte B4820 Dison, Belgique,1975. 90p.
